Ethan Hawke was born on November 6, 1970 in Austin, Texas. He moved a lot together with his mother and ended up in New York. He attended several schools and aspired to be a writer when he was in high school. He also started acting and did his first play when he was 13. He decided to follow acting classes and eventually studied actign at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg.
He dropped out when he got a role in 1989 in Dead Poets Society. His first movie was Explorers in 1985 (which also starred River Phoenix). Dead Poets Society however meant his breakthrough. He had the leading role in White Fang and also acted in A Midnight Clear and Alive. He has since starred in many films including Reality Bites, Before Sunrise, Gattaca, Waking Life, Training Day, Before Sunset and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.
My favorite role of his is the one in Before Sunrise/Before Sunset and I’m looking forward to seeing him in the third installment, which has been filmed already. Other movies of him I also like are Before The Devil Knows You’re Dead and Training Day.
What’s your favorite Ethan Hawke role?
Not really been a fan of Mr Hawke, i do however think he is good in what I have seen him in
Well, it’s impossible to be a fan of everyone, but good to hear that you do think he’s fine in the movies he is in.
Definitely Before Sunrise & Sunset. I also loved Reality Bites and Gattaca.
Haven’t seen those last two movies, but I guess I should…
Hard to say my favorite role of his. Of course his two “Before” films with Linklater. I also loved him in Alive and Traing Day.
I was expecting those two to be named by a lot of people. He was great in Alive and Training Day as well!
I am definitely what you would call a fan, thought not seen too many of his films. My favourite roles of his are probably from Gattaca and Before Sunrise/Sunset. Sometimes I wish he’d do more films!
Nice to hear that, so you’ve enjoyed this post a bit more than normal 😉
Well, you have not seen all his movies yet, so you have a chance to see stuff of his you haven’t yet.
He was so sweet in Dead Poet’s Society. And I completely forgot he was in White Fang! Talk about nostalgia..
I will have to admit that I have seen neither of those movies, guess I should hang my head in shame 😉
Dead Poets Society is a must see.
My favorite Hawke performances were in Before Sunrise/Sunset, though Training Day is certainly up there, too. Love the pic you chose for that movie, BTW. 🙂
Everyone pretty much agrees when it comes to the favorites it seems.
He was so adorable in Dead Poets Society. And pretty memorable in Before Sunset/Sunrise. And surely, Reality Bites.
So I will have to check out Dead Poets Society and Reality Bites then 🙂
Nice post. I love him in Before Sunrise.
Thanks Fernando
I haven’t seen many of his later films but I really like Hawke in Dead Poet’s Society and also Before Sunrise. I’m curious about ‘Training Day,’ still haven’t got around to seeing that one.
Go check out Training Day if you can Ruth, it’s a great movie.
I’ve liked in virtually every movie I’ve seen of his, even those that semi-suck like Sinister, the zombie movie and one where he plays a bad cop. He has an quiet intensity. There is much under hte surface. Even with bad wardrobe (sp) he looks great, even more so as he ages. A handsome character actor. Aside: Really back logged on blog reading, about 50 total. You do have other posts I want to read.
Yeah, I know that feeling of a backlog, each morning I’m shocked by the amount of new blog posts I want to check out, so take your time!
I have a soft spot for Reality Bites (I’ve seen it too many times to count) but I also liked him in Before the Devil Knows Your Dead and the one with Angelina Jolie, Taking Lives. I’m a fan of his acting but not so much him as a person. His nanny? Really?
Have not seen Reality Bites, but I guess I should. Haven’t read anything about him as a person, but you are saying he fell for his nanny?
Divorced Uma, married his nanny and has 2 kids with her. I just think it’s creepy 😉
That is really messed up…
