They say the older the wiser, but if you look at Elle(Lily Tomlin), you might have some doubt. She no longer has any contact with her daughter, just broke up with her girlfriend and only has enough money to take care of her basic needs. She once was a successful writer, but hasn’t published anything in ages. To her surprise her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) suddenly shows up at her doorstep, asking her if she can borrow some money from her. After talking to her she finds out she needs the money to have an abortion, for which she has an appointment later that day. Grandma Elle might not have the money, but she decides to pay a couple of people a visit to make sure she gets the necessary amount. Continue reading

Phantom Boy (2015) – Review
When it comes to animated movies almost all of them involve either talking animals or princesses. That doesn’t mean there is something wrong with that (the recent Zootopia is a good example), but I often get the feeling there aren’t enough variety within the genre. So it was refreshing to see Phantom Boy approach its story differently, with a lot of originality as well. Continue reading
The Gunfighter (2014) – Short film review
It’s Friday, so a great moment to start your weekend laughing and The Gunfighter is perfect to do so as it is one which doesn’t take itself serious and which will probably bring a smile to your face with its concept. Continue reading
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (2015) – Review
As a parent it isn’t always a joy to go to the cinema. Of course it is great to spend some time with your child at the movies and talk about the film afterwards, but sometimes kids want to head to movies you don’t fancy seeing yourself. Recently I was dragged to a very boring movie about two boring dutch cartoon characters, but the fun my daughter had kind of made up for it. The next movie she wanted to see was Alvin and the Chipmunks and because their weren’t any other movies playing she could see we decided to watch it. This is the third one in the series. The first one wasn’t very good, but I was willing to give this movie a chance. It’s something I shouldn’t have. Continue reading
Zootopia (2016) – Review
It’s always exciting when a studio releases a new movie which isn’t a sequel. Releasing such a movie can be a risk (Gods of Egypt is a good example), because making films is not cheap, especially when they are completely computer generated. Disney has been on a roll lately with Wreck-it-Ralph, Frozen and Big Hero 6 (and of course the Pixar movies), so it was exciting to see what they would bring with Zootopia. Continue reading
Deadpool (2016) – Review
A complaint I’ve been hearing more and more about superhero movies, is that they are all alike. Of course that is partly true, but you’d be able to say the same thing about comedies or action movies. It is a genre which has grown enormously the last couple of years and with so many movies it’s easy to see the similarities. Still I think that there is enough variation. If you look at a movie like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is like a cold war thriller, is it something completely different from a Batman movie or shows like Jessica Jones or Daredevil.
Of course they all have strong protagonists who have to battle evil, but that’s the foundation of the genre. If you take a close look at the details, the nuances you can see….oh, wait a minute, this is the intro I was going to use for the next superhero movie review, but as this is a review of Deadpool forget about all of that. This is not a superhero movie like you are used to. Continue reading
Ride Along 2 (2015) – Review
When a movie is a success it is always tempting for a movie studio to consider making a sequel. With an estimated budget of 25 million dollaras and worldwide earnings of 153 million making this second movie was a no-brainer. I’ve tried watching the original three times, but didn’t manage to stay awake during any of those attempts. So I wasn’t really looking forward to this second part, but I do think that Kevin Hart can be amusing sometimes I decided to give it a chance. Continue reading
Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) – Review
The hope that we’ll get another new Die Hard movie which is worth watching seems to getting smaller as the movies (and the acting Bruce Willis does) are getting worse. Still the the original Die Hard movie and this third film in this franchise have gained a special place in my heart. They are wonderful, entertaining action movies in which the main characters end up in a situation which they can’t control and are forced to do anything to make the best of it with the means available. Continue reading
Aloha (2015) – Review
I love to cook and especially during the weekends when I have time to search for a new dish, do my shopping and spend some time in the kitchen. Of course I occasionally pick out dishes which I’ll only make once because I don’t like them, but in general they taste good and the combination of various ingredients turn into a delicious meal.
Making a movie can be easily compared to cooking. There are a lot of elements that come together to deliver a beautiful end product, under the guidance of a master chef. In this case the name of that master chef is Cameron Crowe, who was previously responsible for such films as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky. For Aloha he has managed to pick some very good ingredients in the form of Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Bill Murray , Rachel McAdams , Alec Baldwin and Danny McBride. Together with them he went into the kitchen, but does that result in a flavourful dish? Continue reading
Joy (2015) – Review
Whatever your opinion is about director David O. Russell, you can’t deny that in recent years he has worked with an impressive number of actors and actresses and has made some interesting films like Silver Linings Playbook, Three Kings, American Hustle and The Fighter. In Joy he works together with several people from of his previous films including Jennifer Lawrence, Robert de Niro and Bradley Cooper. Continue reading
