My daughter has now reached an age when she often asks whether she can watch a movie instead of TV. I do not know if that’s because she finds it fun or because they are long, but it’s nice to see that she enjoys them. That means she regularly watches movies that I refuse to see (especially the ones about talking puppies, there are really too many of them), but if I decide to join in then I make sure I might enjoy this. After a short search on Netflix I came across this title. Since this film, like The Lorax, is based on the books by Dr.Seuss I decided to try it Continue reading

The Hateful Eight (2015) – Review
The number of directors of which I need to see their latest movie can be counted on one hand. Quentin Tarantino is certainly one of them, because since seeing his first two films I’ve been a big fan of his style. A director with his own voice, his own kind of movies where not only the images are fantastic, but the choice of music is always original and dialogues is always recognizable as his own (whether in Reservoir Dogs or in a special episode CSI). A new Tarantino film is always an event for me and I could hardly wait to The Hateful Eight, his eighth film. Continue reading
Dope (2015) – Review
Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is a high school student who gets good grades, but in the neighborhood where he lives, Inglewood, that doesn’t automatically mean that he will be successful in his life. His route home is a like a minefield, where he must try to avoid several gangs. Together with his friends Diggy and Jib (Kiersey Clemons) and Tony Revolori (Grand Budapest Hotel), they stand out.
They call themselves geeks and are big fans of nineties hip hop. They not only listen to that music but also dress themselves in the fashion of that time. Malcolm is approached by a local dealer, who asks him to pass on some messages to a girl he likes and because of that is invited to a party. Something occurs there which will change his life: He is more or less forced to sell a bag full of drugs and because of that ends up in various hazardous and unique situations Continue reading
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) – Review
When I’m watching a new movie I’m always looking for a special feeling, one which is hard to describe, because there are hundreds of reasons why you get that feeling. Fortunately, it is easier to specify which movies are responsible for it and in this film, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is one which managed to create that feeling for me quickly. Continue reading
The Walk (2015) – Review
The Twin Towers will always be in our collective memory because of the events in 2001. The buildings were an iconic part of the skyline of New York and it is still weird to not see them when you’ve seen them in so many movies and TV shows in the past. Still they were also the place where in the seventies one man wanted to realise a dream. That man was Philippe Petit from France (played here by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and he wanted to his high wire act between the to buildings. Continue reading
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – Review
When a new Star Wars movie is released, this of course means a lot of hype (and marketing). It meant that the last few months it was next to impossible to stay aways from news about the film (something which I did manage, mostly). A new part in this beloved series also means impossible expectations from the fans. Does director J.J.Abrams succeed to meet them with this seventh movie in the Star Wars saga…or is this the new Phantom Menace? Continue reading
Pixels (2015) – Review
I had promised myself to skip this latest Adam Sandler film. I had a good reasons to do so: If you look at the last ten films he made there isn’t one of them that’s worth watching. In his younger years, I could still enjoy his movies, but I have developed an aversion towards Sandler because he keeps making disappointing movies.
But why did I end up still watching Pixels? Curiosity probably is the most important reason. And I wasn’t curious if he had made a good movie this time, but I wanted to know how the game element is incorporated into the film. As someone who grew up gaming that element excited me so I decided, against my better judgment, to give Pixels a chance Continue reading
Empire – Season 1 – Review
Sometimes you hear about these very popular shows and if you hear about them just enough, you might be interested in checking it out just to see what all the fuss is sabout. Just before the second season of Scandal started I decided to check out the first season. Continue reading
Minions (2015) – Review
It’s funny to see how certain characters in entertainment become so popular that they are actually more popular than the main characters themselves. This was the case with the Rabbits in the Rayman games where the funny, but also very stupid bunnies eventually got their own games and TV show. In the Despicable Me movies the minions were responsible for comic relief and those were the moments that were often the most fun. A spinoff with just these funny yellow figures was bound to happen (just like a flood of merchandise from dolls to “fart guns”). However, are these characters entertaining enough to fill an entire movie? Continue reading
American Ultra (2015) – Review
You take a former CIA agent who can not remember his past (the Bourne films), let him work as a stoner in a small supermarket (Clerks), then send a number of people out to eliminate him (Terminator), which triggers the agent to know exactly what he must do to survive (The Equalizer). Add a little bit of romance to it and the result is American Ultra, with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles. Continue reading
