According to IMDB 2013 has produced a total of 179 animated movies. Included in that number are titles like Frozen, Despicable Me 2, Monsters University, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Croods. These are all movie I’ve seen, but with such a huge number it happens that I’ll miss some. Escape from Planet Earth was one of them and was available on Netflix (and other formats). The first How To Train Your Dragon was, for many unexpectedly, a very well made movie which also got a lot of praise for its use of 3D. Some people even visited the cinema several times because they knew they would not be able to experience it the same way they do in this. I only watched the first movie once but also really enjoyed it. Except knowing that in the original a small town learned to live with dragons I forgot almost everything else about it before watching this one. I did wonder how Dreamworks would be able to go further with the story. Continue reading
There are some movies which manage to enchant you during their running time, which pull you into a world you like to stay in a bit longer. Chef, which is directed and stars Jon Favreau, this is done by the swiftly moving story, the atmosphere, the awesome soundtrack and of course the food. It also stars many great actors and actresses like Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr, John Leguizamo, Dustin Hoffman and Bobby Cannavale in both big and small roles. Continue reading
It is funny to see how a poster and a hype around a movie can influence your expectations. With this movie, based on a popular book, it was immediately clear to me that the target group for this one was teenage girls. I have seen various other movies of this type appear (Twilight, City of Bones, Beautiful Creatures (skipped all of them)), so I was not really jumping for joy to watch this one. My expectation was a predictable movie filled with clichés. But after hearing a lot of very positive things about it I got curious about the quality of the film. Continue reading
Although I really like going to the cinema there are some aspects I do not like. I decided to go watch it at one of the cinemas pretty close to home, but as I am not a fan of football I didn’t know that there was a game on near the cinema. It meant it was almost impossible to find a parking spot and grab a quick bite to eat because of the long lines. I managed to walk into the theater with food in my stomach, right at the moment the trailers had ended (and as that is usually a huge frustration I didn’t have to endure them). I was ready to enjoy the movie, until a woman in the right corner of my eye decided it was a good time to send some whatsapp messages. Don’t know if it was about the film, but that bright screen (she did set the brightness lower, because you know it would be rude not to) was a distraction. I didn’t immediately want to say something about it, but it took a bit longer before I felt I was fully engaged by the movie. Enough about my cinema experience of that day though. Sex sells, which isn’t a surprise. Whole advertising campaigns are based on it and some directors (Michael Bay is the first one I thought of) gladly show the female curves and tough men every opportunity they get. When it comes to comedies it has also been a subject that has been used a lot. From the exploitation movies of the seventies to movies like Porky’s during the eighties all the way to the Apatow movies of the last couple of years. Sex Tape is now playing in the cinema and is very clear about its story. During the last couple of years many celebrity sex tapes have surfaced and there are a lot of couples who decide they want to spice things up and record their love-making. Continue reading

If there is one genre which will always manage to entertain me easily then it is the action genre (probably having to do with growing up in the eighties and nineties). With those movie I’m not bothered by a simplistic story and if it has some good one liners, lots of action and only a few dull moments I’m entertained. Brick Mansions fits the genre perfectly and doesn’t waste much time in showing the viewer its setting. In Detroit there is a neighbourhood which became so dangerous that the city decided to build a big wall around it, guarded by police at the exits making sure the people living there wouldn’t bother others. During the last couple of years I’ve seen a lot of classic movies I had never seen before thanks to working through the IMDB top 250 list. Of course amongst those classics there were some which I simply didn’t like, but where I understood why they are so loved by many. Not everyone likes the same things. Breakfast at Tiffany’s was a movie which I hadn’t watched yet. Of course I knew the iconic image of Audrey Hepburn with the jewelery and the cigaret, but I had never seen anything else about the film. When Inspired Ground did a tribute to the movie I decide it was time to finally check it out and try to understand what all the fuss is about. Continue reading
Does such a thing as talent exit? Was your favourite artist of director really born that way? Or was it something else? Is it possible that they have become as good as they have simply because they put in enough time to learn their trade? As someone who likes learning new things I really don’t believe in talent. It is all about gaining experience, making new techniques your own and repeating something a lot. If you put in enough time you will become good at it. Of course the speed you learn that skill might differ from person to person. Edge of Tomorrow proves that with enough time you will be able to amaze everyone, but in this case that might take you a couple of lives. Continue reading
