Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (2013)

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 review

Thanks to its huge load of successful jokes, an original story and beautifully rendered, delicious food, the first Cloud with a Chance of Meatballs was an unexpected success. The story about how inventor Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) designs a machine that can change water into food, the FLDSMDFR, which broke and made it rain food was very entertaining. When animated movies are a success you can always expect a second movie to be made, which is now available on DVD and Blu Ray. The FLDSMDFR, which seemed to have been disabled in the first movie, seems to still be working. Instead of influencing the weather it now creates something else: Living food, foodimals. 22 Jump Street (2014)

22 Jump Street Review

Before 21 Jump Street was released there were not many movie lovers who were expecting it would be a movie worth watching. Several TV shows were already turned into movies (Miami Vice and The A-Team are just two of them) and in general they were of inferior quality, not being able to make the concept of the TV show shine in movie format. 21 Jump Street managed to surprise though, partly because it made fun of the fact it was a remake of a TV series, but also because of the chemistry between Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. It was a fun, entertaining comedy which was very successful and of course that means a sequel would be made.

The result is 22 Jump Street. Usually sequels to comedies will disappoint because they try to do the exact same thing and it simply doesn’t work again (Analyze That, The Hangover 2). But is this movie able to also surprise people in a positive way like the original did? Continue reading

Philomena (2013)

Review Philomena

Based on a true story

Whenever a movie opens with these words I always start to wonder what is expected of the viewer to do with that information. Should it immediately make you feel a certain way causing you to experience the movie differently? Does the film follows the true story closely? Movies like The Butler and Fruitvale Station were also based on true events, but both of them added things which did not happen or were not accurate. Then there is the example of Fargo, which also starts with those words, but actually wasn’t based on anything real. When Philomena started and I saw that text all these questions ran through my mind… Continue reading

A Young Doctor’s Notebook (2012)

Review A Young Doctor's Notebook

The problem with TV shows/series for me is that they generally require a huge investment of time. With long seasons and many episodes it usually means that during the time I am enjoying a TV show that I can not spend that time watching movies. It is the reason I didn’t pay much attention to series for the past few years. At the end of last year I decided to try again (watching House of Cards and Lilyhammer) and was immediately hooked. So this year I have been watching a lot more shows. A Young Doctor’s Notebook is a miniseries which has the running of the average movie. With just four 22 minute episodes this was something I could easily devour quickly without it cutting into my movie watching. So is it any good? Continue reading

Bad Asses (2014)

Review Bad Asses

The “epic beard man” is back! Danny Trejo, who became well-known thanks to his part in Robert Rodriguez movies like Desperado and Machete, is back in his role as Frank Vega, better known as Bad Ass. He is a war veteran who has become famous in his town because he stood up against some skinheads during a bus ride and kicked their asses. The first movie was based on a Youtube movie and managed to surprise me in a positive way. It was a throwback to the action movies of the eighties and nineties and so is this sequel. As the title already suggests Bad Ass is not alone this time. Continue reading

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

Review Amazing Spiderman 2

When the previous movie rebooted the Spiderman universe I actually was not too interested in seeing the film. I felt it was unnecessary to start it all again, this time with a different actor playing the title role. It was probably a year later that I finally checked out the movie and to my surprise I thought it was very good. I preferred Andrew Garfield over Tobey Maguire as he felt less awkward and more in control of the situation. The story was interesting as well (even though I already knew the story through the first three movies), so I was ready for the sequel. The webslinger is back, so this time I had to see the movie on the big screen. Continue reading

Need for Speed (2014)

Review Need for Speed

Besides being a huge fan of movies, I have been playing games ever since the original Pong home machines. One of my favorite genres has always been racing games. Ever since the Indy game on the Atari 2600 I have been playing them and it is a genre which has developed a lot through the various hardware generations. The first Gran Turismo game took it to a place which was new, where you could race a normal every day car. Besides the very realistic racing games there are the so-called arcade racers. These games are less about realism and more about thrills. I played a lot of these games (Burnout and Split Second come to mind).

The Need for Speed games have been fixed part of arcade racing games, with new installments released yearly. I must admit that I never was a fan of the games. Reason for that is that they are games where you hardly use the brakes and where corners only seem to exist that you can take at high-speed. I never felt they were very challenging or exciting and therefore rarely bought them. The Need for Speed Shift games changed as they moved away from arcade racing and were more simulation based games, more realistic. I did play those games quite a bit.
Movies based on games usually aren’t very good and when I heard this franchise was making the step to film I was not really looking forward to it. Still, there was a chance that it would be interesting. The Fast and Furious movies have proven in the past that movies with a focus on cars can be very enjoyable. Continue reading

Turbo (2013)

Review Turbo

Snails are probably some of the least exciting animals around. They move slowly, are not that interesting to look at and leave a slimy trail behind them. This Dreamworks picture tries to change that image by literally injecting one with nitro, which apparently changes a normal snail into a car like one, radio, alarms and all. If Peter Parker can turn into Spiderman because of a spider bite then this probably makes as much sense. With his new found superpower of speed the snail in question, called Turbo, wants to prove himself and race. And this isn’t a race against other snails, it is against racecars at the Indy 500. Of course this is a ridiculous idea for a movie, but can Dreamworks make it into a fun and interesting movie? Continue reading

Bro’s Before Ho’s (2013)

Review Bro's before Ho's

Relationships can be hard and brothers Max (Tim Haars) and Jules (Daniel Arends) learned that at a very young age. When their mother leaves the house after a fight with their father he tells the two that they should never start a relationship as all women are bitches/ho’s. The two make a pact to never do so and grow up sticking to it. The two go out as much as they can and try to sleep with as many women as possible. That all changes when Max meets Anna (Sylvia Hoeks) as he falls in love with her, but when he finds out that his brother is seeing her he has to decide whether to go with his feelings or stick to his agreement with Jules. Continue reading
