Nebraska (2013)

Review Nebraska

Director Alexander Payne’s previous movie, The Descendants was one of my favorite films of 2012. It starred George Clooney, was set in Hawaii and was about family issues. Although Nebraska also deals with family issues the comparisons end there as this movie is far removed from The Descendants. Instead of a tropical and colorful setting the imagery here is in a bleak black and white. The movie also doesn’t star actors who the average movie going public will know. It is a different beast, but one that is just as interesting. Continue reading

The Lego Movie (2014)

Review The Lego Movie (2014)

“Everything is awesome!” is the one thing you will surely remember after leaving the cinema having seen The Lego Movie. That is what you might think of the movie, but those words are actually the lyrics of the main theme of the movie. If you are honest it sounds like a J-Pop song and despite that knowledge it is very catchy. Two weeks after having seen this movie myself I still hum it from time to time. So the music of the movie is solid, but what about the rest of it? Continue reading

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)

Review The Grand Budapest Hotel

There are some directors whose work you’ll recognize almost instantaneously because of their style. You know that a Michael Bay movie most likely will have some explosions, lots of shots of barely dressed women and a saturated color palette. Quentin Tarantino is known for his dialog and homages to other films and I could name many other examples. If you watch one of their movies you will realize their hand eventually.

One of the most instantly recognizable styles is the one used by Wes Anderson. His movies have a very specific look, where the sets almost have a dollhouse quality to them, often with bright colors and a feel of another time. There are a couple of camera moves he also loves to do, like moving it along one axis….along with the action, often through walls, instead of cutting between faces during a conversation he will actually swing the camera around. The characters in his movies all seem to be unique as well, their clothes having some distinct features which make them stand out. I have to admit that initially I was not a huge fan of his style as I thought his movies were simply strange, but especially with his last couple of movies he has managed to win me over. The stories he tells seem to have become stronger and therefore I was very much looking forward to his new film: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Continue reading

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2014)

Review of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

As adults we seem to be focussed on the practical things of life: Work, our family and friends. The moments where we don’t have anything to do are far and few between. You might still daydream, but I’m sure it won’t be as much as when you were a kid. A time when you could imagine anything and where you didn’t have the life experience yet to realise a lot of those daydreams would never be realised. Walter Mitty is a character though who has kept daydreaming and who zones out when he imagines the most fantastic imagery. It could be him saving people or standing up for something which in reality he doesn’t. He has never realised those dreams, not been anywhere and is stuck in his job. Continue reading

About Time (2013)

Review About Time

What if you were able to manipulate time? How would you use it? Would you think about making a lot of money and buy a sports almanac or would you try to make other changes to history? Playing around with time has always been a very entertaining concept in movies, it is something which sometimes challenges conventional thinking and that is the reason I like the films so much. In About Time, a father (Bill Nighy) tells his son Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) about a big family secret: All the men in the family can travel through time. No special machines required, simply standing in a dark place and clenching your fists is enough to travel. The only restriction is that you can only travel back to moments in your own life. Although the power can be used for a lot of things he decides to use it to find a girlfriend. Continue reading

Bounty Killer (2013)

Review Bounty Killer

With a huge supply of movies you have to make choices about which ones to see. Which way that is done differs from person to person. I usually do that based on IMDB scores, but I sometimes watch movies which don’t score high because a specific actor is in it or if I usually enjoy the director’s work. Bounty Killer is a movie I was given and I decided to watch it without doing any further investigation. Continue reading

Last Vegas (2013)

Last Vegas review film

Star Power is very important to a lot of Hollywood movies. Famous names usually guarantee a lot of people wanting to head to the cinema. Looking at Last Vegas it has heaps of them: Morgan Freeman, Robert de Niro, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline. These men are all Oscar winners, so no reason to doubt their acting abilities. As these men are all getting older it is not a strange choice to make a comedy which makes fun of their age. Other older actors have done the same in the past (examples are Al Pacino and Christopher Walken in Stand Up Guys, but also the fatehr of Michael Douglas did this in Tough Guys in 1986). Do these men succeed in providing the laughs? Continue reading

Analyze This (1999)

Review Analyze This

Robert de Niro became famous for playing characters connected with organised crime. His roles in movies like The Godfather 2, Goodfellas and Casino are iconic. He is good in these roles and playing a mobster in a comedy came as no surprise. Usually these type of movies that make fun of the concept of organised crime aren’t very good. When this first came out my expectations were low, but as it was de Niro I did need to check it out and was pleasantly surprised by Analyze This. It was time to revisit this film. Continue reading

Lillyhammer Season 1 – (2012)

Review van Lilyhammer seizoen 1

When you see Steven Van Zandt you probably recognise him as the guitar player in Bruce Springsteen’s band or as Tony Soprano’s consigliere, Silvio Dante. Even though he never aspired to be an actor he rolled into it when the writer of The Sopranos, David Chase, saw him presenting an award on TV. He asked him to play a role in the show, to which he agreed and so his acting career began. With Lilyhammer he returns into playing the role a mob guy. The question is whether this show can even be compared to the hugely succesful Sopranos. Continue reading

Frances Ha (2012)

Review Frances Ha

When Quentin Tarantino publishes his favorite movies of the year I always take note. I know my tastes aren’t exactly the same as his but there are always movies in the list that are unexpected (like this year’s The Lone Ranger) or some I have not heard much about. Frances Ha falls into the last category. It is a black and white movie and is mostly set in New York. With an open mind I decided to check it out. Continue reading
