Obstruction 3: Pacific Rim (2013)

So because I was on a holiday and had some things on my mind afterwards I was not able to write my review for this obstruction earlier. Since I am very short on time (only 2 hours left) I’m going to have to keep this review short:

Review of Pacific Rim (2013)

We always think that aliens will come from the stars, but it turns out they come from a portal in deep Pacific. The plot (yes there IS one, in case some of you are wondering) is nothing we’ve never heard before but it’s played out quite efficiently here. the earth starts getting periodically attacked by huge monsters (Kauji – a term for Japanese monster movies), so humanity pulls together and builds equally massive robots (Jaegers) to fight back. Monsters Inc. (2001)

After recently watching Monsters University I just had to revisit the movie which made me fall in love with its world, Monsters Inc. Although I remembered most of the story it was good to see it again and at the same time see if the two movies are consistent (the quick answer: not entirely) Continue reading

Monsters University (2013)

Review of Monsters University (2013)

Monsters Inc was the 4th movie which Pixar made in 2001. The story about monsters who scared children at night to generate energy for their own world was a big hit. The main characters of the movie, Sully (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) had a believable connection en the little girl in the movie, Boo, won over many hearts. The movie also brought new technical implementation with realistically simulating Sully’s hair en Boo’s clothing. With Monsters University Pixar returns to this world. The question is whether this prequel will manage to reach the high bar set by Monster Inc. Continue reading

Mortal Kombat (1995)

review of the movie Mortal Kombat

What are the moments in your life that you remember? Which memories have stuck and how come you have forgotten a lot of others? Some say that the reason that some events stick is because there was a strong emotion attached to it. If I think about it, it seems to be valid point if I dig through my own memories. Applying it to movies, it is the reason I can remember a lot about one movie and have no clue what someone is talking about if I didn’t find a movie particularly appealing.

Mortal Kombat is a movie I saw when I was a lot younger and which I remember well. First of all because I used to play a lot of Mortal Kombat with a friend of mine and had a lot of fun playing it. I also strongly remember seeing the movie when it was released, partly because it was one of the first video game movies I saw but also because after seeing it I really liked it and thought the game had translated well to the big screen. Then one of the most well-known movie critics in the Netherlands slammed it and it is that fact I always remembered, because at the time I was quite angry about it. I just felt he was wrong about it. At the beginning of this year I actually met that reviewer (who now also produces movies) and it was the first thing I thought about (although I didn’t talk about it with him). When this movie showed up on the on demand service my cable operator provides I just had to revisit it to see if I was wrong at the time or if I still I thought it was as awesome as I thought back then. 3 Idiots (2009)

Review of the movie 3 Idiots

In general I don’t tend to watch many movies from India. I have seen a few, but the length is a major factor as is the fact that these movies tend to be very different (usually with lot of singing) means I often don’t connect as much to them. If you look at the IMDB top 250 there aren’t many Indian movies on the list. Actually there is only one and as I do like to still watch as many out of the list as I can I decided to check this one out. Continue reading

Lost in Translation (2003)

Review of Lost in Translation

At the beginning of the year one of my goals would be to rewatch more movies than I did last year. In general I tend to prefer watching movies I have not seen yet, but revisiting movies which you have seen is like meeting an old friend you have not spoken to in a long while. You might wonder if you still enjoy their presence as much as before and I had that feeling with Lost in Translation. Continue reading

Fast and Furious 6 (2013)

Fast and Furious 6 review movie Vin Diesel The Rock Dwayne Johnson

The general feeling about sequels is usually that they are a bad thing. Many franchises ran out of steam quickly (Pirates of Carribean, Police Academy, Terminator, Die Hard to name a few) and there is a big number of people who despise sequels, they are often seen as lazy and rehashing an idea. But for every A Good Day to Die Hard there is a Toy Story 3 and there are more examples. Looking at the Fast & Furious franchise I would have never thought that a movie about street racing would result in another 5 movies. Even though the opinions about them might be mixed (personally I didn’t like Tokyo Drift, but had a great time with the rest), nobody can’t deny that is has been a successful run. Part of this is because it stept away from purely street racing and moving towards heists and action, while keeping the fast cars front and center. With Fast Five Dwayne Johnson was added to the existing roster of Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and many other returning faces and it injected fresh blood to make it even more exiting. Seeing Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson fight was a cool thing to see. Fast & Furious 6 sees Dwayne Johnson returning, just like the rest of the crew. Continue reading

The Station Agent (2003)

Review of the movie The Station Agent

There are times when you wish that a director has more movies to his name and for me Thomas McCarthy is one of them. In his career he only directed three movies, Win Win (2011), The Visitor (2007) and this movie, The Station Agent. They are all excellent movies about relationships. All his movies have a soul to them, a realistic depiction of life and how people interact. The Station Agent had been on my “to watch” list for a while after another blogger reviewed it. Continue reading

The Great Gatsby (2013)

Review of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan

I never read books. Unless you consider listening to an audio book reading. I might pick up a magazine once in a while, but the most reading I actually do will be on the sites of other bloggers and when you read the reviews of this movie each and everyone seems to mention what a stunning book The Great Gatsby is and how it is unfilmable. Since I don’t have that knowledge I’ll just assume that is true and focus on my first encounter with the story, through the movie. Continue reading

Moulin Rouge! (2001)

Review of Moulin Rouge!

I’m not big on musicals, maybe the reason for it is the amount of Disney movies I’ve seen where they burst out singing, but I always have the feeling they are not for me. Still I do watch them occasionally and there are some which I do like. Singing in the Rain is a good example and so is this one, Moulin Rouge!. It is a movie I’ve had in my collection for years and felt like watching it again. In anticipation to the Great Gatsby I just had to see another movie by director Baz Luhrmann. Continue reading
