The Thieves could easily be compared to a movie like Ocean’s Eleven. With a star-studded cast of well-known Asian actors from Korea, Japan and Malaysia, including Yun-seok Kim (The Chaser, Nameless Gangster, The Yellow Sea), Simon Yam and Gianna Jun (My Sassy Girl), the movie tells the story of several crews working together to pull off a big heist in a casino in Macau. The movie was a smash hit and was seen by almost 13 million people when it was playing in the cinema. Unfortunately it seems that in the west it hasn’t received the attention it deserves. Hyde Park on Hudson (2012)
Hyde Park on Hudson isn’t a title which will mean much to you if you don’t know much of American history (like I did). The title references the house president Roosevelt had near New York. It was a place he stayed regularly if he wasn’t in Washington. The movie is set just before Hitler started his war in Europe. The English see the threat and the king decides to come to Hyde Park to get support from Roosevelt. The movie tries to depict the historic characters as normal people, including their flaws, but does the movie manage to do that? Continue reading
Guns, Girls and Gambling (2011)
When you look at the career of any actor or actress there are always these movies you would never expect them to appear in. I never expected Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder, Jeff Goldblum in Death Wish or Seth Rogen in Donnie Darko. When I saw that Gary Oldman was starring in this movie as Elvis I just had to check it out. He’s a true chameleon and I was interested to see what he would do with the role, but with a title like that my expectations of the movie itself were very low. Continue reading
Pitch Perfect (2012)
There are some movies which seem to fly underneath the radar and don’t get the attention they deserve. I hadn’t heard of Pitch Perfect before until I saw it reviewed on a fellow blogger’s site. I saw the poster and looked at the trailer (because I expected not to watch it) and really wasn’t sold on it. Then more positive reviews started coming in and I just couldn’t ignore the movie. Is it really perfect or slightly out of tune? Continue reading
Cloud Atlas (2012)
The Wachowskis made a big splash in the movie world when they made The Matrix, which blew away audiences. It was visually stunning and the siblings have made some interesting movies after it, like V for Vendetta and Speed Racer. With Cloud Atlas they again try to bring a spectacle to the screen, but will it wow audiences? Continue reading
Argo (2012)
When I was in school I was always interested in the history lessons as the teacher I had was very good at telling the stories, making it fun to listen to. I must admit that I really can’t remember much of what I learned during those classes and only remember him saying that everything which happens in America will happen over here as well, just five years later. It was very interesting and for a while seemed to be a valid theory. Anyway I’m sure you are reading this to find out my thoughts about Ben Affleck’s third movie in the director’s chair, Argo about historic events which took place in Iran. Now I am pretty sure this was never discussed in the history lessons I took, so going into this movie (just like any other) I had no idea what had happened and was ready to be surprised. Continue reading
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
One of the toughest period in someone’s life is finding their own identity during their teen years. Going to a new school and having to find new friends, creating a new “safe group” you can hang out with can be difficult, you find a place you can belong to. Continue reading
Killing Them Softly (2012)
From the moment Killing Them Softly starts, you know this is a movie that’s different. The sound is disorienting, the cuts sudden and as I heard soundbites from the previous presidential election I started to wonder if the movie had already started or that I was watching a trailer for something else. Set against the streets of New Orleans, which seem to be almost devoid of life, this movie tells a story about crime and possibly about the state of America. A movie which immediately stands out and takes you into the dark world of gambling and hitmen. Continue reading
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
What would you think if you’d see the following ad?
It’s an intriguing one, but the picture would probably make you laugh and think nothing more of it. It does make you wonder though if this guy really was able to time travel. There have been various stories of supposed time travel, but of course nothing which could be proved. This movie is based on this ad and fantasizes what could happen if you’d respond to it. Continue reading
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
I have a confession to make: I’m not a big Wes Anderson fan. Out of all the movies I’ve seen of his there are only two which I enjoyed, which were Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Darjeeling Limited. In general I just can’t connect with all the weird characters which appear in his movies. So I really wasn’t rushing out to see Moonrise Kingdom, but as it has been getting rave reviews I had to find out if this was the third movie I’d like or if I’d better give up on watching his movies. Continue reading
