A while ago Ruth from Flixchatter celebrated the birth of (one of) her favorite actors that has graced the screen, Gregory Peck. She advised me to watch Roman Holiday, which is one of her favorites (you can read here why she loves it so much). So I bought the DVD and, as it goes when you have so many movies you want to watch, it took a while for me to get around to seeing it. So what are my thoughts on this modern fairytale? Mirror Mirror (2012)
It always amazes me that studios always bring out the same type of movies around the same time. If one type of movie is succesful other studios try to bring out something similar. This year it seems to be time for the fairytale movies based on Snow white. Tarsem Singh (The Fall, Immortals) was the first movie to appear and him being known for his unique visual style I was really looking forward to seeing it. Continue reading
Black Out (2012)
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, at least that’s how the saying goes and it seems that director Arne Toonen wants to really flatter Guy Ritchie with this Dutch version of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It is a movie which was made for TV (financed by the Public Dutch Broadcasting Corporation), but it regularly happens that they are also shown at the cinema. This was one of them (even though it only had a short run) and I unfortunately wasn’t able to see it there. Now out on DVD I finally had a chance to check it out. Continue reading
The Avengers (2012)
One of the biggest movies out this year and I might be a bit late to finally review it. I watched it a some weeks ago, just didn’t get around to writing down my thoughts on it. So what did I think of The Avengers? Continue reading
John Carter (2012)
Yes, I have made some fun of the title, it being one of the most bland, non descriptive ones recently, but if you would decide to actually see it, is it any good? Continue reading
Le Havre (2011)
Movies allow you to be transported into different worlds. Even when they seem to be set in a realistic world, that world can be distorted and turned into something surreal. It’s something that can surprise the viewer or throw them off-balance. Director Aki Kaurismäki shows that he can turn the city of Le Havre into a setting for a modern fairytale. Continue reading
Festen (1998)
Can a movie which seems to have been shot on DV cameras (which you can even hear recording) and that has shots where you can see the lens moving around be any good? Continue reading
Tower Heist (2011)
Heist movies have had a long tradition in cinema. You have older classics like The Asphalt Jungle, Rififi and The Italian job but also more recent movies like Ocean’s Eleven and Heat. It’s a genre which keeps thrilling audiences and it all comes down to a small team trying to get something from a highly secured place and the viewer wanting them to succeed. Tower Heist has this too, but can it join the ranks of the previously named movies? Continue reading
The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
Finally out on DVD as I missed it when it was at the cinema this is a movie I was looking forward to. I didn’t read much of the comics when I was young, so I have no idea how much it adheres to the original story, but the fact that Spielberg is involved was enough reason for me to see it. Continue reading
The Three Musketeers (2011)
Now this is a movie I really didn’t plan on seeing. Why? Well, first of all it didn’t get very good reviews, secondly it had a cast of mostly unknowns and thirdly the 3D. That was until I saw this movie appear in Tarantino’s list of movies he liked the past year. Now I know he sometimes has a bit of a weird taste when it comes to movies, but it made me want to see it to find out why he liked it so much. Continue reading
