Beautiful Life (2011)

The Dutch film industry has produced quite a lot of fun kids movies. Films like “Het Geheim”, “Kikkerdril” and “Het Paard van Sinterklaas” are all entertaining movies for the smaller movie audience.

Beautiful Life (the Dutch title would translate to My Grandfather the Bank Robber) is another one that can be added to the list. It tells the story of a father/grandfather (Michiel Romeyn) who after the death of his wife is seen as someone with dementia. His granddaughter Grace (ZoĆ« van der Kust) doesn’t really believe it as she sees how he is struggling with his loss. She tries to help him as much as she can. She doesn’t know her own father as she never met him. She only knows his name and that he was from Surinam (one of the former Dutch colonies). Her mother doesn’t want to tell her why he wasn’t around for her. When her grandfather shows her his picture it ignites the flame for her to begin her search for some answers to her questions. Joe Clay (Jack Lemmon) is a PR-guy who is willing to do anything to keep his customers happy. It’s not a problem for him to arrange a group of women to appear when a prince visits the country and he’s happy to drink along when this is required. During one of his assignments he meets the secretary Kirsten (Lee Remick), who initally isn’t interested in him. Joe however is not someone who gives up quickly and uses all his wit and charm to win her attention. It pays off and the two start to see more of each other and eventually marry. It turns out that there aren’t the only two in the marriage though, because without a bottle of alcohol they don’t feel complete. Continue reading

Life in a Day (2011)

Just imagine that you would be able to experience everything which happens to people all around the world in a single day, what would be the impression you would get? Youtube answers this question together with Ridley Scott, Kevin MacDonald and Joe Walker. Last year they asked Youtube users to send in any video which was made on the 24th of July 2010. They received an overwhelming 4500 hours of footage and managed to cut this down to a one and a half hour film. Does Life in a Day manage to paint a stunning picture of humankind or is this movie comparable to Mr.Brainwash’s Life Remote Control in Exit Through the Gift Shop? Continue reading

The Hangover Part II (2011)

The original Hangover was an unexpected hit in 2009. It told the story of a bachelor party gone wrong, where the groom couldn’t be found anymore and where no one remembered what happened the night before.
The crazy characters, like the socially awkward Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and gangster Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), the unexpected cameo by Mike Tyson and the strange situations the men ended up in resulted in a movie which people remembered and told others about. To me The Hangover was one the best comedies that came out in the last couple of years. It’s no surprise that a sequel would be made, but can The Hangover Part II outdo the original or is it actually the moviegoer that has a hangover after seeing it? Continue reading

Thursday (1998)

Years ago there was a movie shop that imported DVDs, which I visited regularly. Every week they mailed a newsletter which had various movie lists and interesting reviews of movies I never heard of.
One of the movies they talked about was Thursday, which was hard to get as it was only available by importing it from Germany. Because the staff had written raving reviews I decided to order this movie. As things usually go when I buy a movie it might take a while before I actually watch them. In this particular case it took years before I finally got around to seeing it. Is it a fine wine that I had left to ripen or is it a waste of time? Continue reading

My Sassy Girl (2001)

The romantic comedy. It’s a genre where a lot of people (especially men) will have mixed feelings about. The target audience are usually women and the stories are very predictable, although there are always exceptions to this rule who manage to do extra things to make them stand out (for example Forgetting Sarah Marshall or When Harry Met Sally). Is My Sassy Girl anything special? Continue reading
