Ronin Suirai Tantei, also known as Top Knot Detective outside Japan is a TV show from the eighties, starring Takashi Takamoto. Besides that he also wrote and directed it. In this documentary several people are interviewed who were involved with the show together with old VHS-video of the show, of which the originals have been destroyed by the production company because of controversy surrounding Takamoto. Or at least that’s what this movie wants you to believe. Continue reading

The Wailing (2016) – Review
Maybe I’m slowly starting to sound like a broken record, but South Korean cinema has been offering the most interesting and unpredictable movies in years. An action movie can contain humour or the hero turns out not to be exactly who he seems to be. The director of The Wailing, Na Hong-jin, previously made the tense and dark The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, in which a cab driver with a debt gets an opportunity to get rid of it by committing a murder. It managed to get the adrenaline pumping. The Wailing is no exception and is a true rollercoaster ride of emotions (and genres). Continue reading
Despicable Me 3 (2017) – Review
The return of the yellow creatures was looked forward by many, this time together with their boss Gru again who is working for the Anti-Villain League (AVL). He has to fight Balthazar Bratt, a bad guy who seems to still think he lives in the eighties, when he was successful as a child actor. Gru’s mission doesn’t entirely goes as planned and together with his wife he’s fired. No longer making money he has to wonder what he is going to do now, but when he hears he has a twin brother, Dru, he decides to see him, together with his family. Continue reading
See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) – Review
When I think of funny linkups between actors in movies, than Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder are two who I always think about. When See No Evil, Hear No Evil appeared on Netflix soem time ago (one I had seen several times in the past) I couldn’t resist to check out the movie once more. Continue reading
Wonder Woman (2017) – Review
While Marvel Studios keeps making record-breaking movies with their superhero movies, their biggest competitor (DC) can’t seem to hit the same highs. After Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy their titles have almost all received negative scores on Rotten Tomatoes and their attempt at creating their own DC Cinematic Universe seem to fail. Although Wonder Woman (played by Gal Gadot) appeared in Batman v Superman, it was time to show her origin story. Is this the movie with which DC finally succeeds in creating something which is generally loved? Continue reading
War Machine (2017) – Review
In general the shows which Netflix releases are of high quality and often can’t be missed. Unfortunately that isn’t the case for the movies the company has released under its name (with an occasional exception). War Machine looks like an interesting film, with Brad Pitt starring and it’s directed by David Michôd who previously was responsible for the great Animal Kingdom. The movie also has a number of surprising cameos from famous actors and actresses. Is this great Netflix movie? Continue reading
Mindhorn (2016) – Review
A while ago Mindhorn appeared on Netflix, which looked like a very silly film. However when I’m in the right mood I am willing to give movies like that a chance (Kung Pow still is one of my favorite comedies) and this seemed like one I might enjoy. Continue reading
Demain Tout Commence (2016) – Review
Thanks to Intouchables the career of Omar Sy has had an enormous boost. After that film he hasn’t only appeared in French movies, but also made the move to Hollywood. He appeared in Jurassic World, Inferno, Burnt and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Although he wasn’t bad in those roles he’s better when he is the focus of the movie. Thanks to him Intouchables was a success, but also in Monsieur Chocolate he showed that he was strong in a role that asked for a bigger range of emotions. In Demain Tout Commence this is also the case, although it mainly is about his comedic talent. Continue reading
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) – Review
The new series of Planet of the Apes movies, which started in 2011 is one of the better franchises in the past few years. Thanks to amazing special effects and strong stories Rise and Dawn were a joy to watch. War for the Planet of the Apes is the end of this trilogy. Does this manage to close it as strong as it started? Continue reading
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) – Review
When news initially broke that after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield another actor would be portraying Spider-Man, the reaction mostly was that people weren’t really looking forward to it. The movies with Andrew Garfield told the “origin” story again and most didn’t think it was necessary to go through all of that a third time. But after seeing Tom Holland in the role during Captain America: Civil War, many concluded that his take was refreshing and wanted more. It was cool to see Tony Stark take him under his wings but also fun to see him fanboying when he first met the Avengers. It is quite an achievement that Spider-Man: Homecoming has been realised so quickly after that movie and actually closely fits with that film. Does Holland’s portrayal of the webslinger also work in a two hour long movie? Continue reading
