Still it can sometimes be worth looking around and recently I was asked if I was interested in seeing The New Adventures of Aladin, which is available through Walk This Way (a platform which focusses on European productions). It is the last day of school and at Roosevelt High School it means that the students are allowed to pull pranks all day. This results in a school at which not everything goes as it normally does and it is a challenge for the teachers to “survive” the day as anything can happen with either their car or during their classes. Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) doesn’t realise at the start of the day what his will look like, but it will be a lot worse than he can imagine. Grumpy history teacher Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) asks him to help him, but because of what happens next it gets Strickland fired. He wants revenge and challenges Andy to a fight, after school, outside. Continue reading
During his career Vin Diesel has played various characters, but he’s mainly an actor who has been successful as an action star in his Fast & Furious and Riddick movies and the extreme sports version of James Bond: xXx. The first movie in the franchise was bizarre but enjoyable and in the sequel his role was played by Ice Cube. As the title already implies Diesel is back (after 15 years). Does that result in a film worth watching? Hell yes. Continue reading
Sometimes there are these movies which are part of a genre you don’t like, but where you have heard so many great stories about that you jsut have to give that a chance. To me that was the case with Get Out, which is part of the horror genre (which I don’t really like). When I recently talked to a fellow blogger he made a comparison to a Hitchcock movie. Hidden Figures tells a story you don’t see in many films. Of course there are enough movies which are about people who are good at something and strive to be the best, but there aren’t many which tell a story about three African-American women who played a very important role in the NASA space program while the United States still had laws in place which treated them differently. I’m organising a Dutch movieblogger get together event in two weeks where I’ve rented a cinema and of course that meant I had to look for a movie to show. More than 40 moviebloggers will show up, so it has to be good. After a documentary I really was interested in turned out to be slightly disappointing I had to continue my search. I asked some American bloggers if they had some tips for me and started watching the trailers. Of the titles it was this movie which I liked most, a light comedy starring some famous actors as well. You are familiar with them, those small, daily frustrations. A colleague or roommate who didn’t clean up, people in the supermarket who pretend they don’t see you when rushing to the register to get ahead of you or that other driver who was driving behind you when two lanes have to merge, but still tries to get in front of you once you have merged. Depending on your state of mind you either let it slide or let it get to you. For Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) those type of moments keep piling up. When she comes home and finds out that a burglary took place and the police states that there isn’t much they can do, she has had enough. Continue reading
There are characters on the silver screen you love to spend time with and which you look forward to returning. Of course baby Groot is one of them, but so is the rest of the crew in Guardians. A group which was forced together through circumstances and which managed to win the hearts of movie audiences. With its humour, nostalgia for the eighties, strong soundtrack and lots of action that wasn’t a surprise. All those ingredients are present as well for this sequel. So if you have seen the original you probably won’t even hesitate going to the cinema to find out what adventures await the guardians this time. Continue reading
