Gandhi (1982)

Watching these historical movies time and time again show me that I’m seriously lacking in knowledge about world history as also was the case with this film. I knew that India was ruled by the English and that Gandhi was very important in the process of the country becoming independent, but that was about as far as my knowledge went. This biopic shows the process which took place to make that independence happen and the difference one man can make in changing the future. Continue reading

Argo (2012)

review

When I was in school I was always interested in the history lessons as the teacher I had was very good at telling the stories, making it fun to listen to. I must admit that I really can’t remember much of what I learned during those classes and only remember him saying that everything which happens in America will happen over here as well, just five years later. It was very interesting and for a while seemed to be a valid theory. Anyway I’m sure you are reading this to find out my thoughts about Ben Affleck’s third movie in the director’s chair, Argo about historic events which took place in Iran. Now I am pretty sure this was never discussed in the history lessons I took, so going into this movie (just like any other) I had no idea what had happened and was ready to be surprised. Continue reading

Metropolis (1927)

Metropolis had been on my “To watch” list for a very long time. Its history, part of the movie being discovered, the praise it has received and that iconic image of the robot were all reasons why I wanted to see this. I hadn’t seen it yet because of its length (I don’t mind silent movies), but finally managed to make the time to see this movie classic. Continue reading

The Heroes of Telemark (1965)

During my holiday we stayed at a house very close to the town of Rjukan. It’s a very small town, but during the second world war it was very important. The town had a power station and the nazis took over the plant to produce heavy water. The allies feared that this heavy water would be used to create a nuclear bomb and decided to make sure they were not able to. The powerstation is still there and we payed it a visit. It is now a museum and tells in detail about the history of the town and what happened during the second world war. The events that took place were the inspiration for the Heroes of Telemark. When I saw that this movie was sold there and was also told it was shot on location I just had to get it. Continue reading

Game Change (2012)

Recensie Game Change

Living in Europe I really don’t follow the elections in the United States in much detail. I will hear about who’s running for each party and occasionally see some background detail or some jokes about a candidate, but that’s about it. Game Change looks into the presidential election of 2008, when Obama was running against McCain. Continue reading

Topaz (1969)

Topaz review
This is another movie that my father in law suggested I’d watch. I had never heard of it and once I finally got around to checking it out I was happily surprised that this is a Hitchcock movie. It turns out the X-Men were not the only ones who were involved in preventing the Russian missle crisis in Cuba. Continue reading

The Three Musketeers (2011)

Now this is a movie I really didn’t plan on seeing. Why? Well, first of all it didn’t get very good reviews, secondly it had a cast of mostly unknowns and thirdly the 3D. That was until I saw this movie appear in Tarantino’s list of movies he liked the past year. Now I know he sometimes has a bit of a weird taste when it comes to movies, but it made me want to see it to find out why he liked it so much. Continue reading

Das Boot (1981)

review of Das Boot
My stack of of DVDs that I still have to watch has been big for ages. Some movies have been in it for years and Das Boot was one of them. I heard amazing stories about this film, but because of its length (close to 5 hours) I never made the time to sit down for it, until recently. Continue reading

Albert Nobbs (2011)

Albert Nobbs review

As you know I usually go into the movies without knowing anything about it. Albert Nobbs was part of a preview festival I went to and apart from a thumbnail of the poster I went in blank. No idea what it was about and who played in it. When the movie started I saw the name Glenn Close show up on the screen and although it vaguely rang a bell I really couldn’t think of a face that matched the name. When the movie started I got an uncomfortable feeling. Continue reading

Immortals (2011)

Despite knowing that this was a movie not a lot of people seemed to like (one look at Rotten Tomatoes makes that clear) I still was curious to see if this would be a movie I’d enjoy. I haven’t seen The Fall yet (but the DVD is waiting on my “to watch” stack and remembering that The Cell (which I saw while on holiday in Florida) was visually striking I wanted to find out if director Tarsem Singh managed to do the same with this movie. Continue reading
