The World’s End (2013)

The World's End review

I don’t know if you have the same feeling as I have, but I think 2013 has seen the release of a couple of very solid comedies. I really enjoyed watching This is the End, We’re the Millers (have not reviewed these yet) and now The World’s End can be added to that list. The comedic duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are back together in another adventure, which initially doesn’t seem that thrilling. Continue reading

Europa Report (2013)

Review of Europa Report

Not too long ago I reviewed Red Planet, which I quite liked up till the moment that some unnecessary elements were added (like a robot turned enemy). I wished that it would have just been about the survival of the crew and with Europa Report it seems that this is the movie I wanted to see. In this case the journey does not go to Mars, but to a moon of Jupiter. So the story is of the type I would like to see, but question is: Is it any good? Continue reading

Trance (2013)

Review of the movie Trance

Danny Boyle to me is one of the most interesting directors around. Looking at his filmography the movies he has directed are all very different in subject matter. Movies he has made include Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Trance is the next movie in his impressive career and the concept of this movie is an original one and could have easily been a Hitchcock movie with secrets deeply locked away somewhere needing to be uncovered. Continue reading

Red Planet (2000)

Review of the movie Red Planet

Mars has long been an interesting resource for movies. Usually that means that aliens are coming from the planet to attack the earth. Red Planet doesn’t take that idea and is set more in reality. It’s about a group of people sent to Mars. Earth is slowly becoming inhabitable and the seeds had been planted to create an atmosphere to make it a new home, but things didn’t go as planned and a crew is sent to the planet to find out why. I never saw Red Planet before and when it showed up on my VOD service I decided to check it out. Continue reading

Blow Out (1981)

Review of Blow Out starring John Travolta

Movie posters and DVD covers should make you want to see a movie, but if you’d look at the one Blow Out has, you would immediately skip it. It only has a warped image of John Travolta’s head, screaming. Not a great way to sell this movie, but look a bit further and you will see that this movie has been directed by Brian De Palma, who also directed Scarface and the first Mission Impossible (among many others). Heard some good things about this movie so I was interested in giving it a chance. Continue reading

Upstream Color (2013)

Review of the movie Upstream Color

Some movies linger in your head for days. The first movie I remember doing that was Donnie Darko. It was something like you wanted to make sense of, a puzzle which needed to be solved. Through the years I have seen other movies that have done this, one being Primer, directed by Shane Carruth. I never have been able to make complete sense of that movie (which I do not mind because Carruth himself has said he left out some essential parts to keep you guessing), but I still remember it fondly. It’s no surprise then that I was looking forward to his second movie, Upstream Color. I mentally prepared myself to be challenged and not being able to find answers again, but was that necessary? Continue reading

Iron Man 3 (2013)

Review of Iron Man 3

The reason I really enjoyed the first Iron Man movie was not because of the fact that a comic book character was coming to the big screen. I don’t read comics, so to me it’s just another action movie. Iron Man could be any other character as long as the story keeps me entertained. No, the reason I really enjoyed the first Iron Man movie was mainly because the actor playing him, Robert Downey Jr. He brought so much humour to the role, of this rich guy feeling superior and able to back it up that it wasn’t difficult to root for Tony Stark. Because of that I really looked forward to Iron Man 2. It was a movie that ended up disappointing me, because the character seemed different, there weren’t as much wisecracks and the movie felt overly long. The Avengers brought everything back I was expecting from the character, which made me confident that Iron Man 3 would be a better movie than the sequel. The question is if that’s the case. The Navigator: A Medieaval Odyssey (1988)

Review of time travel movie The Navigator: A Mediaeval Odyssey (1988)

Time travel has always fascinated me. When I was young I loved reading the “Suske en Wiske” comics, where a time travel machine was regularly used to help go on an adventure or help someone out. I might not read the comics anymore, but the idea of being able to visit the future or past and see what’s different from the time we live in is extremely compelling. Although I’ve seen quite a lot of movies which feature it, it turns out there are quite a lot of them which I have not seen yet. Time to change that as I’ve begun to slowly work my way through some of them, with this movie being the first. Continue reading

The Thieves (2012)

Review of the Korean film The Thieves

The Thieves could easily be compared to a movie like Ocean’s Eleven. With a star-studded cast of well-known Asian actors from Korea, Japan and Malaysia, including Yun-seok Kim (The Chaser, Nameless Gangster, The Yellow Sea), Simon Yam and Gianna Jun (My Sassy Girl), the movie tells the story of several crews working together to pull off a big heist in a casino in Macau. The movie was a smash hit and was seen by almost 13 million people when it was playing in the cinema. Unfortunately it seems that in the west it hasn’t received the attention it deserves. Premium Rush (2012)

Review movie

Expectations are a very important factor to your enjoyment of a specific movie. If you are looking forward to a specific film all year, chances are you will be very disappointed by it. Another thing to factor in is the environment in which you watch it and who you do that with. Personally I prefer not watching trailers or reading much about upcoming movies to keep my expectations low and really don’t mind heading to the cinema by myself.

When it comes to Premium Rush I didn’t know much, except that it was about bikers and that Joseph-Gordon Levitt was starring in it. So did I like it or was I disappointed by it? Continue reading
