Beyond a Reasonable Doubt (2009)

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt review

It’s been a while since I saw a Michael Douglas movie I enjoyed. A while ago a DVD store near me had a big sale and going through stack and stacks of DVDs trying to find my personal treasures I found Beyond a Resonable Doubt. The cover looked cool, it had Michael Douglas in it and it seemed to be a courtroom drama. Worth seeing right? Continue reading

I’m a Cyborg, But That’s OK (2006)

If you are even remotely familiar with Korean cinema, then I’m sure you have heard or have seen movies directed by Chan-wook Park. Joint Security Area, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance and Oldboy are all very good movies which all dealt with pretty dark subject matter. Looking at the title of this movie you might already guess that this movie is a whole different beast and you are right. It feels like a movie which could have been made by Michael Gondry as it has some of the same unique qualities. Continue reading

Catch .44 (2011)

review Catch .44

I have a question for you (and it’s not even Monday). Do you ever have the feeling when you are watching a movie that it strongly reminds you of some other movie or that the style is very similar to a movie done by a specific director? I think it happens to all of us and as the number of movies you watch increases it’s a feeling that will happen more often as well. I had it very strongly with this movie. It seems that writer and director Aaron Harvey has been watching a lot of Quentin Tarantino movies. With a lot of focus on dialogue, a non linear storyline, similar music choices, grindhouse style cuts and some very violent scenes Catch .44 offers a lot of the same. Does it manage to reach the same level as Tarantino’s movies? Continue reading

The City of Violence (2006)

The City of Violence review

If you look at the above picture you might be thinking that you don’t remember this scene when you saw The Warriors. You would be completely wrong….no, just kidding! This is part of The City of Violence, a Korean action movie about Tae-su, a detective who goes back to his hometown to attend a funeral of one of his friends from school. He meets up with others and decides to investigate the death of his friend. He finds out that something is going on. Continue reading

Guest review: The Big Combo (1955)

Recently I asked Jack Deth if he would be interested in writing a guest review. I always enjoy contributions and was happy that he was willing to write something about a movie he could choose, here are his thoughts on The Big Combo (which does contain lots of spoilers):

The Big Combo review

First of all, I would like to thank Nostra for the invitation to be a guest reviewer. It is not often that one gets a chance to flex their muscles on such a delightful site.

That said, for those who have come across my comments elsewhere. My comfort zone is older films. Predominantly Black & White. With specific interest in Film Noir. To that end, please allow me to wax long and poetic about what I consider to be one the the essential films of the genre. Continue reading

The Princess Bride (1987)

There are some movies I would never watch if it wasn’t for lists like the IMDB top 250. The Princess Bride would be a good example of this. Looking at the summary and some pictures this didn’t seem like my type of movie. When I bought the DVD it was in a “Princesses” box together with another princess movie starring Anne Hathaway. I had the feeling that I was buying something for a little girl as it was all pink, but had to watch this one. Luckily my persistence was awarded with a very nice movie. Continue reading
