I’m someone who did not grow up reading comics. I occasionally read Donald Duck or Spike and Suzy, but I did head to to the bookstore every week to buy them. The Marvel comics therefore never registered with me and I wasn’t really interested in them. But thanks to all the movies and series in recent years, I understand why people love the Marvel comics. Every superhero does have his/her own characteristics, which means there is always one which appeals to you. After seeing Deadpool last week it did make me interested in reading comics with him. Through the films and the various series you get to know these characters and the quality of them is usually high. After the fantastic Daredevil it released the next super hero at the end of last year: Jessica Jones. Continue reading

As I Open My Eyes (2015) – Review
Film is a powerful medium to convey certain ideas or situations in a sensitive and subtle way to others. It can open eyes because it shines light on the dark past of a country (for example The Act of Killing ) or results in changes (such as Blackfish). In recent years there were several revolutions in various countries in the Middle East. Not all of them have achieved the desired result, but it has showed the world how powerful it can be when everyone speaks up. Tunisia also belonged to those countries and it is the place where this film takes place, on the eve of Tunisia’s Jasmine Revolution. Continue reading
Speed (1994) – Review
This week is a bit of a theme week here as I’m reviewing films that contain bombs. So I’ve recently rewatched a couple (and some for the first time) and will review them this week. On Friday I’ll close it of with a top 10 of the best movies with bombs.
So today it’s time for the first movie and that’s one with a Dutch influence. The director is none other than Jan de Bont and this was his American film debut, one which made a splash and would allow him to direct mmovies like Twister and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life Continue reading
The Beauty Inside (2015) – Review
How important is you appearance to you? For many people it will be a very important deciding thing, because it plays an important role in the first impression you make on others. It also will influence how you feel about yourself. In the entertainment and fashion industry it seems the only thing you are judged on and where getting older isn’t allowed. But what would happen if you couldn’t do anything about your appearance? What would happen if you woke up inside a different body each day? That’s the reality the main character in this movie, Woo-Jin, faces. r
Mr. Holmes (2015) – Review
Detective Sherlock Holmes has been popular for years. If you do a search for the character on IMDB you’ll see that since 1911 there have been 120 movies and shows about the character. The best known ones are of course the movie with Robert Downey Jr. and the BBC series starring Benedict Cumberbatch. You might wonder, because already so much content is available about him, whether it is still possible to make something about Sherlock Holmes which feels fresh. But that’s exactly what Mr. Holmes tries to do. Continue reading
Broken Circle Breakdown (2012) – Review
I decided to start out the year well and immediately start watching a Blindspot movie. When I saw that this movie was available through one of the on demand services I am subscribed to it was easy to decide which one to start with. I had already been warned by de Protagonisten, two fellow Dutch blogger, that this wouldn’t be an easy watch….and boy, were they right. There was nothing which could have prepared me for the emotions I’d be going through during the next 111 minutes. Continue reading
Aloha (2015) – Review
I love to cook and especially during the weekends when I have time to search for a new dish, do my shopping and spend some time in the kitchen. Of course I occasionally pick out dishes which I’ll only make once because I don’t like them, but in general they taste good and the combination of various ingredients turn into a delicious meal.
Making a movie can be easily compared to cooking. There are a lot of elements that come together to deliver a beautiful end product, under the guidance of a master chef. In this case the name of that master chef is Cameron Crowe, who was previously responsible for such films as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky. For Aloha he has managed to pick some very good ingredients in the form of Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Bill Murray , Rachel McAdams , Alec Baldwin and Danny McBride. Together with them he went into the kitchen, but does that result in a flavourful dish? Continue reading
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) – Review
When a new Star Wars movie is released, this of course means a lot of hype (and marketing). It meant that the last few months it was next to impossible to stay aways from news about the film (something which I did manage, mostly). A new part in this beloved series also means impossible expectations from the fans. Does director J.J.Abrams succeed to meet them with this seventh movie in the Star Wars saga…or is this the new Phantom Menace? Continue reading
American Ultra (2015) – Review
You take a former CIA agent who can not remember his past (the Bourne films), let him work as a stoner in a small supermarket (Clerks), then send a number of people out to eliminate him (Terminator), which triggers the agent to know exactly what he must do to survive (The Equalizer). Add a little bit of romance to it and the result is American Ultra, with Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles. Continue reading
A Swedish Love Story (1970)
After recently watching both A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence and Songs from the Second Floor by Roy Andersson, I was interested in seeing some of his older work. A Swedish Love Story was recently re-released and the title interested me. Might this be a movie that’s similar to something like Before Sunrise? It’s a bout two teenagers, Annika and Pär who fall in love during a hot summer. Continue reading
