The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015)

Review Hunger Games Mockingjay part 2

Although I’m definitely not the target audience for young adult movies (even though I still feel like I’m young), I can still appreciate them. And just like in every genre there are good and bad movies. I quite enjoyed the first film in this series, but the sequels didn’t manage to convince me as much. Mockingjay Part 1 felt empty and not much seemed to be happening. After 3 movies it’s finally time for the last part. Does it manage to recapture the excitement of the first film? Continue reading

Project Almanac (2015)

Project Almanac review

While some women just can not get enough of romantic comedies, I have that with movies about time travel. I still have a list of movies I haven’t seen which have some sort of time in them. When I heard about this movie, I could not restrain my curiosity. Not every time travel movie is good of course, but because I’m a big fan of the concept in movies, I can easily forgive some rough edges in them. Continue reading

Spectre (2015) – Review

Review Spectre

The James Bond franchise is one of the longest running ones in movie history. With its 24th movie, there still is a huge audience wanting to see 007. It’s a character that’s still appealling. This does mean that the world in which it is set needs adjusting once in a while to remain relevant. When Daniel Craig took over the baton from Pierce Brosnan in Casino Royale the series moved away from the weird gadgets en the secret agent lived in a realistic world which was a whole lot darker. Het became a man with feelings who was in real danger. Despite the fact that its sequel, Quantum of Solace, wasn’t as good it was Skyfall (with it’s winks to the past) and an impressive bad guy which won over the hearts of both the public and the reviewers. Does Spectre manage to do the same? Continue reading

Boy 7 (2015)

Review Boy 7

As you probably know I live in the Netherlands, but if you’d start searching for reviews of Dutch movies you won’t find many. I never have found Dutch movies that interesting and of course you might wonder why that is the case. A big reason is that most movies are romantic dramas or romantic comedies (and usually not very good one), in which I’m not that interested. There are exceptions, like the fantastic Wolf, but in general it’s not worth giving most of them a try. Boy 7 did interest me though as it is a science fiction movie and I couldn’t remember any other dutch movies in this genre. Continue reading

Carol (2015)

review Carol

Past weekend the 13th PAC festival was held in the Pathé cinemas in The Netherlands. It is held twice a year and have been visiting for a couple of years now. Each time it is held various quality movies are shown which will be released here in a couple of weeks or months. It makes going worth your time, also because the movies are the ones you might not pick out yourself if you had the chance to. The atmosphere during that day is always nice as you are sharing the same experience with a big group of people from 10 in the morning till 11 in the evening. This time Carol was the opening movie, starring Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchetta which is based on the novel The Price of Salt. Continue reading

The Farewell Party (2014)

The Farewell Party review

Although I’m far from being an elderly person, I’m now 40 and am more and more realising how real death is. You notice it by people in your surroundings dying or seeing actors or artists you’ve been following your whole life pass away. We are all mortal and hope we’ll die in a peaceful way, preferably in our sleep. The possibility is there that you’ll get a disease which can’t be cured, which makes the end painful and tough. What are your options then? Do you want to wait for death to come naturally or do you decide to look at euthanasia? It is a possibility is some countries, but this isn’t the case everywhere as this movie from Israel shows. Continue reading

Spy (2015)

Review Spy

In Bridesmaids I thought Melissa McCarthy was very funny, but every other movie after that I saw with her I thought was very disappointing. I simply didn’t think she was funny and she got on my nerves. That was the most important reason I initially skipped Spy. But after all the glowing reviews (and the fact that Jason Statham is in it) I just had to check out this spy comedy, directed by Paul Feig. Was my growing annoyance with McCarthy invalid? Continue reading

Danny Collins (2015)

Recensie Danny Collins

Al Pacino is already 75 years, but the actor does not even seem to think about retiring. If you look at the films he has made in recent years, their quality might not have been good for each one of them (he was criticized for his role in Jack and Jill), but as a filmfan I always look forward to his appearance. It is an actor who has more than earned his marks with a variety of classic roles (such as The Godfather, Scarface, Dog Day Afternoon, Heat and Carlito’s Way). With Danny Collins, he shows that he is still full of energy, but is it also a movie you must check out? Continue reading

The Age of Adaline (2015)

The Age of Adeline Recensie

Not being able to die and having eternal life has its advantages, but it also has its downsides. You’ll see the people you love slowly ageing and there will come a moment when you decide to keep your secret from others. But enough talk about Highlander! The Age of Adaline uses the same concept, minus the sword fighting. The emphasis in this film is: romance. Continue reading

Beyond the Lights (2014)

Review Beyond the Lights

The entertainment industry is a tough business, in which a hit single isn’t always a guarantee for a long career and where popularity can be gone in an instant. You’ll have to work hard to get to the top…and to stay there. It’s something which the mother of Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), Macy Jean (Minnie Driver), has figured out early. When her daughter wins second price in a talent competition she forces her to throw away her price, because second best isn’t good enough. Her mother’s drive to push her to be the best eventually pays off, but it also has a dark side. Continue reading
