The Wachowskis made a big splash in the movie world when they made The Matrix, which blew away audiences. It was visually stunning and the siblings have made some interesting movies after it, like V for Vendetta and Speed Racer. With Cloud Atlas they again try to bring a spectacle to the screen, but will it wow audiences? Continue reading

Savages (2012)
When it comes to Oliver Stone’s movies there is one thing you usually expect and that’s controversy. It happened during JFK when he showed his theory as truth and during Alexander with the sexual preferences of the character. Wil Savages be controversial? It does have some shocking scenes, but as this is an adaptation of a book I don’t expect there will be a lot of controversy about its story. The only thing which will cause a lot of conversation is the ending of the movie. Continue reading
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
One of the toughest period in someone’s life is finding their own identity during their teen years. Going to a new school and having to find new friends, creating a new “safe group” you can hang out with can be difficult, you find a place you can belong to. Continue reading
Skyfall (2012)
Growing up I remember watching some of the Bond movies starring various actors playing the iconic character. I never really fell in love with this franchise however as I always had the feeling that they offered the same type of story time and time again. Rinse and repeat until it felt silly (which probably was because of the Roger Moore movies).
The franchise needed some new blood and made relevant again and with Daniel Craig and Casino Royale it was pushed into Bourne territory. I really liked the movie, but felt disappointed again after seeing Quantum of Solace. Although I wasn’t really excited about this new installement in the adventures of Bond I did decide to check it out with the hopes it would offer that which I loved in Casino Royale. Continue reading
Amour (2012)
There are some movies which you are able to appreciate for their looks and there is hardly anything you can fault, but still you end up not liking the movie. Unfortunately Amour is a movie where I had that feeling. Continue reading
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
What would you think if you’d see the following ad?
It’s an intriguing one, but the picture would probably make you laugh and think nothing more of it. It does make you wonder though if this guy really was able to time travel. There have been various stories of supposed time travel, but of course nothing which could be proved. This movie is based on this ad and fantasizes what could happen if you’d respond to it. Continue reading
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
I have a confession to make: I’m not a big Wes Anderson fan. Out of all the movies I’ve seen of his there are only two which I enjoyed, which were Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Darjeeling Limited. In general I just can’t connect with all the weird characters which appear in his movies. So I really wasn’t rushing out to see Moonrise Kingdom, but as it has been getting rave reviews I had to find out if this was the third movie I’d like or if I’d better give up on watching his movies. Continue reading
Metropolis (1927)
Metropolis had been on my “To watch” list for a very long time. Its history, part of the movie being discovered, the praise it has received and that iconic image of the robot were all reasons why I wanted to see this. I hadn’t seen it yet because of its length (I don’t mind silent movies), but finally managed to make the time to see this movie classic. Continue reading
Save the Green Planet (2003)
Being in the right mood is very important when watching a specific type of movie. Get it wrong and you can sometimes don’t like movies which you would love. After watching Save the Green Planet I wondered if it was one of those cases where it was something I should have watched with a different mindset. Continue reading
The Heroes of Telemark (1965)
During my holiday we stayed at a house very close to the town of Rjukan. It’s a very small town, but during the second world war it was very important. The town had a power station and the nazis took over the plant to produce heavy water. The allies feared that this heavy water would be used to create a nuclear bomb and decided to make sure they were not able to. The powerstation is still there and we payed it a visit. It is now a museum and tells in detail about the history of the town and what happened during the second world war. The events that took place were the inspiration for the Heroes of Telemark. When I saw that this movie was sold there and was also told it was shot on location I just had to get it. Continue reading
