Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010)

Movies based on games usually aren’t well-known for their great quality, for example Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter and Max Payne. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is based on the 2003 game with the same name (de franchise started in 1989). If finished the game and thought it was a really great game. The Arabian nights atmosphere, the beautiful environments, the acrobatics (running along walls, making incredible jumps) and of course the possibility to rewind time all impressed.

Unfortunately the developer (Ubisoft) decided to change the whole feeling with the Warrior Within. The games just misses the magic that the Sands of Time had. It seemed to be based on a rock/gothic vibe and the focus on platforming was changed and fighting seemed to be more important. After that game I actually stopped playing the Prince of Persia games. However I was very interested in this movie as it was based on the Sands of Time. Does the movie manage to be just as good as the game or is it as disappointing as the Warrior Within? Annie Hall (1977)

Woody Allen’s Annie Hall ranks high within the IMDB top 250 (it’s on place 132 at the moment). I heard it was one of the best romcoms around and the it won the Oscar for best movie, beating Star Wars. After reading about these facts i just had to see this movie. You can imagine my expectations were very high. Continue reading

Valentine’s day (2010)

Valentine’s day is one of the most commercial days of the year (like christmas), this movie also tried to earn some money by making a movie about it. The number of well-known actors that play in this movie can’t be counted on one hand (Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher and many more). Continue reading

Juno (2007)

After watching both Thank you for smoking and Up in the Air i also had to see another Jason Reitman movie, Juno (after suggestions from other). Ellen Page is Juno, a 16 year old girl that finds out she is pregnant. Is Juno just as good as the other two movies or is it as painful as giving birth? Continue reading

On the waterfront (1954)

Marlon Brando, a very impressive actor. Whether you know him from the Godfather (of course his most famous role) or Apocalypse now, the way he acted isn’t comparable to other actors. He was very different in his mannerisms and the way he talked. In “On the waterfront”, based on the story of a dockworker and his struggle with organised crime, we see the story of Terry Malloy. He’s a former boxer who helps the mob by doing small jobs for them. Continue reading

(500) Days of Summer (2009)

Being in love and finding the right one. There have been so many movies about the subject, but this movie gives it’s own interpretation. Is it necessary to have “sparkles” to start a relationship or do you just have to take a chance with someone that’s interesting and just see how it develops? Continue reading

Brazil (1985)

This cult movie from 1985 is set in the future (which looks very different from ours), where everything is controlled centrally. Director for this movie was Terry Gilliam, who later in his career directed 12 Monkeys and Fear and loathing in Las Vegas. The effects in this movie are very well done. Instead of CGI, miniatures and special camera angles are used. Personally I like these type of special effects better as the effects being created on computers. At the end of the eighties it took over the craft fo creating miniatures, which has been used much less afterwards. Adding new CGI effects to old movies is also something that should not be done in my book. A good example is E.T., for which I prefer the original version. E.T. might move less dynamic, but he feels like a real creature. But enough about special effects, back to my Brasil review. Continue reading

P.S. I love you (2007)

P.S. I love you, starring Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank, was an impulse buy as it’s sometimes nice to watch a romantic movie together. Unfortunately the thought that this was a romantic comedy proved to be completely wrong. This movie is the confirmation to not always trust an IMDB score. It scored 6,9 there, but when you check the score on rottentomatoes, you realise that it’s actually very bad with a 23%. I agree completely with this last score. Continue reading

Before Sunrise (1995)

Since 2004 I’ve been rating each movie I see. At the moment that makes a total of 615 titles. From this list there are only a small number of movies that I’ve rated a 10. I can’t really make a specific order (although I do know what my favorite movie is, which I will discuss in this series as well), but will be discussing them all in the weeks to come.

The first movie is Before Sunrise, with Ethan Hawke (Jesse) and Julie Delphy (Celine). They meet in the train in Vienna and Jesse manages to get Celine to keep him company during the night he has to wait in Vienna until his plane leaves. Continue reading
