One of the most impressive new shows this fall is HBO’s Westworld. Not only the concept of the show, which is about a realistic wild west world themepark where the people “working” in it are actually androids that are there to be used (and abused) by the rich visitors. It looks amazing as well and it’s definitely a must-see. And that’s even without mentioning the impressive cast, including Jeffery Wright and Anthony Hopkins. Still the idea of this show isn’t original. It all started with this 1973 movie, which even got a sequel named Futureworld and also had spinoff TV show (Beyond Westworld), which was cancelled after a few episodes. After having seen all the episodes which have aired of the new show I was curious about the movie which started it all. Continue reading

Black Mirror – Season 3: Nosedive
Online we all will present ourselves slightly different from the way we really are. We won’t quickly share our negative side or bad quality pictures of ourselves. Reactions on posts others have written on social media will generally be very enthusiastic. But what would the world look like if you’d really live your online persona, where everything is perfect and you will constantly have to hide all your frustration and negative feelings? And what if you would should it and everyone around you would turn into a reviewer and give you stars based on that? That more or less is the idea behind the first episode of season 3 of Black Mirror. Continue reading
Equals (2015) – Review
What will the future look like? It’s something none of us can predict accurately, as the past has proven. Still the various visions of the future are fascinating and the number of movies which paint a picture of a possible future is immense. Usually they revolve around one idea. In Logan’t Run everyone can do anything they want until they are 30, when they disappear. In the Divergent movies people are grouped based on a strong characteristic and Gattaca shows that only people with perfect DNA have a good life. It’s easy to think of varioius other examples Continue reading
400 Days (2015) – Review
After the fantastic The Martian I was looking for another science fiction/space related movie and 400 Days sounded like an interesting one. Because if we ever want to travel long distances in space it is important that a group of people is able to handle it psychologically. That’s what 400 Days is about. Continue reading
Time Renegades (2016) – Review
One of the movies I had in my top 100 favorite movies was Frequency. The concept, in which two people living in different time periods have a connection and use that to communicate is fascinating. It’s not the only movie which does this, just think of the South Korean film Il Mare (or the American remake The Lake House), but also the romantic Somewhere in Time. Time Renegades (also from South Korea) is the latest addition to the genre and I loved it. The fact that this has also been directed by Kwak Jae-yong, who was also responsible for My Sassy Girl which also was in my top 100. Continue reading
Criminal (2016) – Review
At the start of the nineties Kevin Costner was one of the biggest stars in the movie world, but because the number of visitors slowly started dropping after the success with Dances with Wolves he slowly disappeared from the spotlight. This doesn’t mean he didn’t keep working and during the last couple of years you slowly see him appearing again doing small roles in big movies (like Man of Steel or Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit). And although he was starring in 3 Days to Kill, the movie itself wasn’t that good. Two years later and now he stars in Criminal. Is this the comeback Costner’s been waiting for? Continue reading
Hitman: Agent 47 (2015) – Review
There are exactly two things I remember about the Hitman movie from 2007:
1. Timothy Olyphant played the hitman
2. That that’s the only thing I can remember about the film
And after seeing this movie, which I assume is a reboot, I am certain that I will be saying the same thing about this movie in a couple of months as I will probably have forgotten everything about it. Continue reading
The Final Countdown (1980) – Review
Sometimes it can be very interesting to fantasize about how some movies would have turned out if other decisions had been made. What if specific actors would have said yes to roles which are now considered iconic? Would that movie still have been a success? You could do the same for big historical events. the Final Countdown does so in a very original way. Continue reading
Hardcore Henry (2015) – Review
Is it still possible to innovate after more than 100 years of film? In all those years so many creative minds have brought their visions to the screen that you could assume that we’ve reached the top of what’s possible. But still some filmmakers succeed in making your jaw drop to the ground because they tell their stories in new ways or by effectively using certain techniques like never seen before. The Wachowski’s managed to stun by using two techniques and combining them (still cameras and computers), which brought something fresh to the table.
During the last couple of years the capabilities of digital cameras have quickly grown. Drones enable directors to make shots for which they used to hire helicopters, special setups allow for shooting 360 videos making it possible for the viewer to direct the action. High resolution cameras have become so small that you are able to stick them to your body. That last one is exactly what the makers behind Hardcore Henry have done and the end result is the first full length, first person action film. Continue reading
Can a computer write a good script? Sunspring shows the first results
What will our future look like? And then I’m not even talking about the climate or a political situation, but mainly about technology. Artificial intelligence is quickly evolving and Google has recently shown that self learning computers are able to beat the world champion at the game Go. A movie like Her already shows the development it is going through might eventually to something which is able to think better than a human. The impact of that on society will be enormous. Will a technology company still have a need for programmers or testers when artificial intelligence can do their work effortlessly, 24 hours a day and much faster? Continue reading
