Diplomatie (2014)

Review Diplomatie

It’s 1944 and the end of the second world war is approaching. Dietrich von Cholitz (Niels Arestrup), German military governor of the occupied Paris has received the assignment from Hitler to destroy the whole city, making sure the allies will find nothing but debris. It will mean all famous landmarks will disappear. The most effective way to get this done is by blowing up all bridges crossing the Seine, resulting in a destructive flooding of the city. It would mean the loss of many lives.

A Danish diplomat, Raoul Nordling (André Dussollier), who knows more than he shows, is trying to change the mind of the governor in this historical drama. Continue reading

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Review Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

After the bad reboot of the franchise by Tim Burton it seemed that it wasn’t possible to breath new life into this old movie series. My expectations for Rise of the Planet of the Apes was extremely low, but the movie managed to surprise me in an extremely positive way and even ended up in my top 10 of 2011. I was looking forward to the sequel and wondered if it could retain the high quality of the first film. Continue reading

Gomorra – Season 1

Review Gomorra season 1

Organised crime has always been an interesting subject for both movies and television shows. People are always fascinated by people who live their lives outside the rules. Even though they are always in danger they wield power and wealth allowing them to live a life of luxury. The Godfather movies and a tv show like The Sopranos are extremely popular not because they are all about a violent existence, but mainly because they also show the personal relationship between people and show the effects the environment they are living in can have on them. It is what the 12 episode first season of the Italian mafia series Gomorra also attempts to show. Continue reading

Black Mirror – Season 1: National Anthem

Review of Black Mirror National Anthem episode s01e01

During the last couple of years I haven’t watched too many television show and therefore I missed many great shows. This was also the case for Black Mirror. Many people I know told me I should be checking it out, especially because I’ve always had a lot of interest in technology. It made me curious and decided to give it a watch, especially since a season only consists of three episodes. Now I normally don’t like including spoilers in my reviews, but as this is a series I’m going to break that rule. I’m also going to review each episode separately. If the first episode is any indication of the quality of the rest of the season, I’m in for something amazing. If you have not seen this show yet you can stop reading now and check out the first episode, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. It simply is phenomenal. Continue reading

The Terminator (1984)

Terminator review

Various movie franchises exist where I suffer from selective memory loss. In my movie mind a second and third Hangover movie don’t exist, Analyze This never got a sequel and after the first Matrix movie only some spectacular outtakes appeared. After the first two Terminator movies it was a shame no others were made. It was time to revisit those two movies, starting with the first one. Continue reading

Snabba Cash 3 (2013)

Review Snabba Cash 3

The last part of the Snabba Cash (or Easy Money) trilogy takes a further look into the lives of the characters of the first two parts. JW leaves for the United States to find out what happened to his sister who disappeared years ago and Jorge is also trying to change his life and escape the criminal environment. Does this third movie succeed in keeping the same high level as the previous two movies? Continue reading

The Raid 2 (2014)

The Raid 2 review

One of the best action movies of the last couple of years in my book is The Raid. The story could be summarized in one sentence (a police team has to fight their way up a building to arrest the leader of a criminal gang), but more wasn’t needed. This was because the film offered one thing in abundance: Action. Adrenaline pumping, raw action. It is no surprise that I couldn’t wait to check out the sequel and my expectations were very high. Does The Raid 2 manage to meet them? Continue reading

Snabba Cash II (Easy Money 2) (2012)

Recensie Snabba Cash 2

The second part of Snabba Cash continues the story of the criminals introduced in the first part. A couple of years after the events of the first movie one of them is released from prison. Hij has plans to better his life and stay away from criminality, but unfortunately that turns out to be harder than expected. What came to pass in the first part has had its impact on others resulting in bigger roles for minor characters from part 1. Revenge, quick money and double-crosses are the order of the day again. Continue reading

Snabba Cash (Easy Money) (2010)

Review Snabba Cash

Sometimes you discover trilogies you have never heard of before. This was the case for me with the “Stockholm trilogy”, which is known over here as Snabba Cash or Easy Money. As this is a Scandinavian movie series it isn’t that surprising I had not heard of them as these movies simply do not get as much publicity as American movies. When a movie spawns several sequels, it usually means that the first movie was good (and successful) as movie studios usually don’t put money into something which flopped. Continue reading
