When the first Hunger Games movie came out I read a lot about it being a very good movie. So I looked forward to checking it out. After having seen it though I did not get all the praise it received. Sure, the movie looked beautiful with impressive costumes, great special effects and detailed sets, but if you stripped all that away it told a story not unlike Battle Royale. Among my friends many of them felt the same wah, so when the sequel was released and again was getting a lot of positive reviews I was cautious. Maybe this would be one of those franchises which wasn’t for me. Still I felt I had to give it a chance. Continue reading

The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
There are some directors whose work you’ll recognize almost instantaneously because of their style. You know that a Michael Bay movie most likely will have some explosions, lots of shots of barely dressed women and a saturated color palette. Quentin Tarantino is known for his dialog and homages to other films and I could name many other examples. If you watch one of their movies you will realize their hand eventually.
One of the most instantly recognizable styles is the one used by Wes Anderson. His movies have a very specific look, where the sets almost have a dollhouse quality to them, often with bright colors and a feel of another time. There are a couple of camera moves he also loves to do, like moving it along one axis….along with the action, often through walls, instead of cutting between faces during a conversation he will actually swing the camera around. The characters in his movies all seem to be unique as well, their clothes having some distinct features which make them stand out. I have to admit that initially I was not a huge fan of his style as I thought his movies were simply strange, but especially with his last couple of movies he has managed to win me over. The stories he tells seem to have become stronger and therefore I was very much looking forward to his new film: The Grand Budapest Hotel. Continue reading
The Bridge – Season 2
Although most popular TV series are made in the US, the Scandinavian countries have proven that they also produce a lot of great shows. On of those shows is Bron/Broen, better known as The Bridge. Season 1 managed to be extremely interesting from the start. A body was found at the middle of a bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden. The departments of justice of the two countries have to work together on the case because of it. It was a thrilling story with an ending you will not be able to forget. That first season wrapped everything up nicely and when I heard that a second season would be made I started to wonder if it would be able to reach the same quality as the first season. My fear was that it would feel extremely unrealistic and forced. That first season everything the story flowed in a convincing and natural way. I also wondered how you would be able to bring the characters together again. Continue reading
Saving General Yang (2013)
Althought the average moviegoer will mainly watch movies coming out of Hollywood, there are a lot of very good movies made in other countries. The past couple of years I really started appreciating South Korean films. Movies like My Sassy Girl, Old Boy, The Host of No Mercy are just some examples of movie I really liked. The Chinese movie industry has also a lot of amazing films. Most people will know Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but there are tons of other movies to check out like Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower and the many Ip Man films. I have to admit that I should be watching more Chinese made movies, but it is something I don’t get around to often because there is such an overwhelming supply of movies I want to check out. Continue reading
Frozen (2013)
I used to love watching animated movies. If there was a new one I just had to check it out as soon as possible. But something has changed and I’m not sure what it is. Even though every year has some great animated movies, there are a ton of horrible ones. I guess I have seen too many bad ones to be excited about what is being released. Last year I could not be bothered to check out movies like Planes or Turbo because the concept behind them just felt like marketing and nothing more. Movies just to sell toys. Still I did watch some animated movies. One of them was Epic and that film disappointed me and probably also made me a bit more cautious. Still I was quite intrigued by the teaser trailer for Frozen and since this is a Disney movie it could be good. Tangled was a lot of fun, so chances were this one would be enjoyable too. My trip to the cinema confirmed my hopes. Continue reading
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
The Lord of the Rings trilogy told an epic story, filled with adventure and when The Hobbit trilogy was announced people were expecting the same. Last year’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey did not manage to match those expectations. Although I did enjoy it, the movie felt too long, with not much happening. As someone who has not read the books a lot felt like filler. It is not a movie I am tempted to revisit. Now having seen the second movie I would almost be inclined to say that most of the first movie could have been scrapped with only some small portions added to this one. If you have not seen the first one you could easily see this second film and not miss out on much. The hobbit and the dwarf continue their journey to reclaim the city of the dwarves. Continue reading
American Hustle (2013)
A star studded cast is not always a guarantee that a movie will be good. The Counselor is a recent example (if the reviews are believed). There is only so much great actors can do with material which isn’t good enough. American Hustle is full of great actors: Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence. The question is whether the story is as impressive as its cast. Continue reading
+1 (2013)
Although there are several movies which involve time travel, it is a genre which is relatively small when compared to other genres (at least that is my feeling). It is one of my favorite types of film though, so if there is any opportunity to check one out I always do so. Plus One deals with a specific subgenre, the time loop. Timecrimes and Triangle are two examples of movies which use the concept of time repeating to great effect and they are both movies I really enjoyed. How does +1 compare? Continue reading
Captain Phillips (2013)
Tom Hanks is one of those actors I love watching in anything. Not all movies he stars in will always be good, but I will see a movie if I know he is in it. In Captain Philips he plays the titular role of a captain who has to deal with Somali pirates who want to take control of his ship. The movie has been directed by Paul Greengrass, who is best known for his work in the Bourne movies. He’s a director who knows how to frame action in a way that involves you and in this case that is a good fit for the type of story that’s being told. Continue reading
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
During the last couple of months I have played a lot of Grand Theft Auto 5. It is a beautiful looking game which creates a very convincing world. People drive their cars, do their daily business, cinemas play movies, celebrity bus tours drive around, there is a huge number of details, many which I’ll probably never notice/run into. The game allows you to switch between three characters at any moment and if you are not playing with the other two they will just do their own things. Although this is a game it made me wonder at times how these characters would experience me taking control or the impact my actions would have on random passers-by. I basically wondered how real their world would feel for them. It is a subject which has been explored in movies. The Matrix is probably the most famous example, but Existenz and Dark City also deal with it. The Thirteenth Floor is also a very interesting take and actually close to what I was thinking about while playing GTA5. Continue reading
