So because I was on a holiday and had some things on my mind afterwards I was not able to write my review for this obstruction earlier. Since I am very short on time (only 2 hours left) I’m going to have to keep this review short:
We always think that aliens will come from the stars, but it turns out they come from a portal in deep Pacific. The plot (yes there IS one, in case some of you are wondering) is nothing we’ve never heard before but it’s played out quite efficiently here. the earth starts getting periodically attacked by huge monsters (Kauji – a term for Japanese monster movies), so humanity pulls together and builds equally massive robots (Jaegers) to fight back. Not too long ago I reviewed Red Planet, which I quite liked up till the moment that some unnecessary elements were added (like a robot turned enemy). I wished that it would have just been about the survival of the crew and with Europa Report it seems that this is the movie I wanted to see. In this case the journey does not go to Mars, but to a moon of Jupiter. So the story is of the type I would like to see, but question is: Is it any good? Continue reading
Danny Boyle to me is one of the most interesting directors around. Looking at his filmography the movies he has directed are all very different in subject matter. Movies he has made include Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Trance is the next movie in his impressive career and the concept of this movie is an original one and could have easily been a Hitchcock movie with secrets deeply locked away somewhere needing to be uncovered. As a man you sometimes need to see a movie which feeds your primal instincts. A movie which is raw and visceral and packs a punch. Movies like Rambo and The Raid satisfy that need and show that you don’t need a lot of background story to do so. Olympus Has Fallen’s Rambo is Mike Banning, played by Gerard Butler. He is a former bodyguard of the president, who had to stop his service because something which happened in the past. The setting here is the White House and the bad guy is current Hollywood favorite, North Korea. Continue reading
Mars has long been an interesting resource for movies. Usually that means that aliens are coming from the planet to attack the earth. Red Planet doesn’t take that idea and is set more in reality. It’s about a group of people sent to Mars. Earth is slowly becoming inhabitable and the seeds had been planted to create an atmosphere to make it a new home, but things didn’t go as planned and a crew is sent to the planet to find out why. I never saw Red Planet before and when it showed up on my VOD service I decided to check it out. Continue reading
The general feeling about sequels is usually that they are a bad thing. Many franchises ran out of steam quickly (Pirates of Carribean, Police Academy, Terminator, Die Hard to name a few) and there is a big number of people who despise sequels, they are often seen as lazy and rehashing an idea. But for every A Good Day to Die Hard there is a Toy Story 3 and there are more examples. Looking at the Fast & Furious franchise I would have never thought that a movie about street racing would result in another 5 movies. Even though the opinions about them might be mixed (personally I didn’t like Tokyo Drift, but had a great time with the rest), nobody can’t deny that is has been a successful run. Part of this is because it stept away from purely street racing and moving towards heists and action, while keeping the fast cars front and center. With Fast Five Dwayne Johnson was added to the existing roster of Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and many other returning faces and it injected fresh blood to make it even more exiting. Seeing Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson fight was a cool thing to see. Fast & Furious 6 sees Dwayne Johnson returning, just like the rest of the crew. Continue reading
Movie posters and DVD covers should make you want to see a movie, but if you’d look at the one Blow Out has, you would immediately skip it. It only has a warped image of John Travolta’s head, screaming. Not a great way to sell this movie, but look a bit further and you will see that this movie has been directed by Brian De Palma, who also directed Scarface and the first Mission Impossible (among many others). Heard some good things about this movie so I was interested in giving it a chance. Continue reading
As you may know my favorite movie is Black Swan and when I read that director Darren Aronofsky bought the rights to Perfect Blue I knew I had to watch it. In Requiem for a Dream he has remade one of the scenes exactly. Watching Perfect Blue I could also see that Black Swan has some similar subject matter. Continue reading
The reason I really enjoyed the first Iron Man movie was not because of the fact that a comic book character was coming to the big screen. I don’t read comics, so to me it’s just another action movie. Iron Man could be any other character as long as the story keeps me entertained. No, the reason I really enjoyed the first Iron Man movie was mainly because the actor playing him, Robert Downey Jr. He brought so much humour to the role, of this rich guy feeling superior and able to back it up that it wasn’t difficult to root for Tony Stark. Because of that I really looked forward to Iron Man 2. It was a movie that ended up disappointing me, because the character seemed different, there weren’t as much wisecracks and the movie felt overly long. The Avengers brought everything back I was expecting from the character, which made me confident that Iron Man 3 would be a better movie than the sequel. The question is if that’s the case.
