In the Heat of the Night (1967)

In the Heat of the Night is an important movie in movie history. It was made in 1967 and was one of the first movies in which the main part was played by a black actor who had the role of a character that was smarter than the other white characters.

Sidney Poitier (as Virgil Tibbs), who had won an Oscar 3 years earlier for his role in Lillies in the field, plays a police officer who, because he happens to have change trains in a small town in the south of America, ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Reason for this is that a murder has been committed that evening and he is arrested as suspect. Continue reading

King Kong (1933)

King Kong is one of the most famous monsters the film industry has produced. This original 1933 version has resulted in many remakes, the latest being a faithful recreation in 2005 by Peter Jackson (which also follows the same story as the original including a spider scene which was cut from the original) By now everyone knows the story about a movie producer who wants to shoot his next movie on a far away island, which turns out to be inhabited by dinosaurs and a big gorilla. The star of the movie, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) is captured by the gorilla and the rest of the crew decide to fight the monster to get her back. Continue reading

The American (2010)

Anton Corbijn is one of Holland’s best photographers. He has done a lot of work for bands like Depeche Mode and U2, taking pictures and making videos. As for movies, he already made Control , a movie about Ian Curtis. Now he’s back in the director’s chair in a return to the silver screen with The American. The movie tells the story of American Hitman Jack (George Clooney). After an unexpected situation in Sweden he leaves the country and ends up in a little village in Italy, where he receives a very easy assignment. Continue reading

Armored Car Robbery (1950)

I love it when you read the title of a movie, you exactly know what it’s about. The title of Armored Car Robbery can’t be any clearer and it is a classic heist movie. It’s also one of the first of this genre.
Part of these movies are of course the planning, the heist itself and getting away from the police. This film has them all and manages to show them in a great way. The mastemind behing the heist is Dave Purvis, who plans the heist and is very proud of the fact that no one knows what he looks like. Within criminal circles his name is well-known. Continue reading

Paprika (2006)

What’s the best way a filmmaker can visualize dreams on the big screen? Of course there are the nightmare scenes where the person suddenly wakes up, sweating, but how do you show that very surrealistic feeling you have when you dream? With Inception Christopher Nolan showed his vision about dreams. The movie had some great effects (like the city folding up and all the action in the hotel), but despite these effects and the nice sets the dreams themselves were not that strange, sometimes almost normal. This is not the case with Paprika and it shows how fantastic and scary dreams can be and it does so (at least I think so) better than Inception. Continue reading

Green Zone (2010)

With the Bourne trilogy Matt Damon has proved (together with director Paul Greengrass) that he is a versatile actor that is also excellent in action movies. Greengrass and Damon teamed up again to make Green Zone. They’ve chosen Iraq, shortly after the invasion by the US, as backdrop for their story. Is Green Zone “Jason Bourne in the Middle East” or does the movie manage to create its own identity?

Following (1998)

Following is Christopher Nolan’s (Memento, Inception) first movie he wrote and directed. It has been made on a very small budget and took months to film as all the actors had day jobs and were only available during the weekends. After Nolan’s house was burgled he wondered what a burglar is thinking while he is walking through a house and sees things like pictures or items. Following is the execution of this idea.
Bill is a writer who randomly follows people on the streets. He slowly starts to get addicted to it and becomes obsessed by it. It slowly turns him into a stalker and one of the guys he is following notices this and start talking to him. Turns out that guy is a burglar and Bill is so fascinated by this that he asks if it is possible to join him to see how he does his job. It doesn’t stop with just watching and Bill keeps passing his own moral boundaries. Continue reading

Salt (2010)

During the cold war (but also after it ended) Russians were usually the bad guys in movies.
When the threat of Russia had disappeared Hollywood started looking for a new enemy and ended up with terrorist, who usually came out of the middle east.
Salt succeeds to bring the Russian threat back in its setup. The timing of the movie in July seemed perfect with the news of the discovery and capture of a couple of russian spies who already lived in America for several years. This is also the idea behind Salt. The execution of the idea really manages to bring back the cold war feeling that existed in the eighties. Continue reading

Inception (2010)

The essence of a movie can usually be described in one sentence, which gives you enough information to get a feeling what the movie is about. This sentence has been formed based on an idea. When that idea has been thought up the script writer start expanding on it. Together with set builders and many other people involved in preparation they are the architects who create the world in which the movie will be set. This can be a single room or many locations, anything is possible.

When preparation is done the director and actors step into the world and take care in filling in all the small details. They do this by improvising, making changes to scenes or shooting it a specific way. All this takes places within the confines of the concept for the movie.
When the movie finally has been edited, it’s up to the person that goes to the cinema to step into this temporary reality. If the movie is a good one you’ll disappear in it, the world around you no longer exists and you forget that you are sitting in a chair at the cinema. You are actually in the place that is shown on the screen. The ending of the movie is the shock that takes you back to reality. If the movie was powerful and had some messages that resonate with your own ideas they might even become part of your own values. If that’s the case, the whole team behind making the movie has made a masterpiece.

Inception uses this concept, but instead of movies they use this on dreams. Christopher Nolan ( Following, Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige and The Dark Knight) shows his vision on what’s possible in your dreams, but has he managed to create a masterpiece? Continue reading

The Ghost Writer (2010)

The life of a ghost writer (someone who writes books, speeches or lyrics for others) isn’t easy. No one is allowed to know that you are responsible for something and you’ll never get any respect from the readers, someone else will however. The only thing you’ll get is a bag of money and you will have to start looking for your next job. Ewan McGregor (whose character doesn’t have a name and is called The Ghost in the credits) is such a writer and has been asked to write the memoirs of English prime minster Robert Lang (Pierce Brosnan). He has a very short time to finish it. Lang already had a ghost writer, but he was found dead and it’s up to The Ghost to finish the book. He is caught up in a political web when Lang is mentioned in an international case about the treatment of some prisoners. The Ghost starts searching for some answers. Continue reading
