Vertigo (1958)

According to MedicineNet.com:

Vertigo is a feeling that you are dizzily turning around or that things are dizzily turning about you. Vertigo is usually due to a problem with the inner ear. Vertigo can also be caused by vision problems.

The word “vertigo” comes from the Latin “vertere”, to turn + the suffix “-igo”, a condition = a condition of turning about). Vertigo is medically distinct from dizziness, lightheadedness, and unsteadiness.

After a chase on the rooftops of San Francisco, John ‘Scottie’ Ferguson (James Stuart) starts suffering from it. He’s even afraid to get on small ladders. He has to quite his job and leaves the police force to become a private detective. He’s asked by an old friend to shadow his wife as she has been acting very strange lately. He takes the job and follows the woman everywhere she goes around San Francisco, which results in not only some beautiful shots of the city, but also a suspenseful thriller as only Hitchcock could make them. Night Train to Munich (1940)

Night Train to Munich, written by the same team that was responsible for Hitcocks The Lady Vanishes (Frank Launder en Sidney Gilliat), is an exciting spy/action thriller.
The story is set at the beginning of the second world war. The nazis are interested in a scientist who is developing special armor plating and they decide to track him down.
The manage to locate him, but are just too late as he escapes to England. His daughter isn’t as lucky and ends up in a concentration camp. Continue reading

The Great Escape (1963)

Steve McQueen is an icon and he always features prominently on the posters for this movie. Although he’s in this movie he actually does not appear in a lot of scenes. It’s the other actors that show what they got and they definitely impress.
The Great Escape is een movie that’s based on an actual, big scale escape attempt from a second world war nazi camp. A number of British and American members of the airforce have been captured and are held in the camp. These prisoners do try everything to make life a living hell for the captors by constantly attempting to escape. They do this by digging tunnels or wearing a disguise. These are just small attempts that are not on the scale of the great escape as for this escape they plan to do it with a couple of hundred men at the same time. Continue reading

Eyeborgs (2009)

What’s the first thought that goes through your mind when you hear the title “Eyeborgs”? For me there were two things:
1. B-movie
2. Associations with the Terminator movies (so some science fiction)
The second point made me decide, despite point 1 to give this movie a chance. My expectations were not very high. The only well-known actor that is part of the cast is Danny Trejo and he’s only in 2 scenes if I remember correctly. Is Eyeborgs a movie worth watching? Continue reading

Mr. Nobody (2009) – Movie of the year?

What are the consequences of the choices you make? That’s the big question that’s asked in Mr. Nobody. It’s 2092 and Nemo Nobody is the last mortal man on earth. The rest of humanity has found a possibility to live forever (it’s not made clear why Nemo is not using it). At age 118 he’s big news as everyone is waiting for his death. A journalist manages to get into his room and ask him to tell about the life he has lived. Nemo starts his story and it seems like he’s not telling about his life, but about several different lives. Continue reading

Unthinkable (2010)

Terrorism has been the subject of many movies. Examples are Arlington Road, Fight Club, Die Hard, V for Vendetta, United 93, Der Baader Meinhof Complex or TV series like Sleeper Cell and 24. Unthinkable also is based on this subject, but instead of going the action movie route it chooses the format of a thriller. Continue reading

The Book of Eli (2010)

After a big disaster of global scale there are always people who survive it. At least that we learn from movies like The Road , I Am Legend (which I gave a 6 ) and Waterworld. Of course this is almost necessary as it will become pretty hard to make an interesting movie (although the movie 9 managed to do it (which I gave a 7)). The Book of Eli also gives its vision on what a post apocalyptic world might look like. Continue reading

Haeundae (2009)

No, the picture above is not from the Day after Tomorrow movie, but from Haeundae, which is a South-Korean disastermovie about a Tidal wave. The Day after Tomorrow had a budget of 125 million. Haeudae didn’t have that much money available, only 11 million dollar (the most expensive South-Korean movie ever made). Does the movie succeed to be convincing despite the relative small budget? Continue reading
