Before watching Warcraft my expectations of this film weren’t very high. The couple of pictures I saw of it didn’t really make it look appealing and as it is also based on a game chances were big that it wasn’t good. Gamemovies in general aren´t known for quality and the genre hasn´t delivered a film which managed to surprise (in a positive way). Still, looking at the director, I had some hope. Duncan Jones has been responsible for the impressive Moon, so he might be able to deliver a quality film. Continue reading
Even though time travel movies is considered a separate genre, it is quite easy to make further distinctions within it. They can be adventurefilms, comedies or mysteries, but there are several of them which focus on romance. My favorites about the subject are About Time and the Christopher Reeve film Somewhere in Time. The Time Traveler’s Wife was a title which I hadn´t seen yet, but had been wanting to for a very long time. The way in which a movie is shot can do a lot to set the tone. Wes Anderson played with the formatting in Grand Budapest Hotel, which all represented different eras. Director Xavier Dolan wanted to show the emotional state of the main character in Mommy by using a 4:3 format and only once using widescreen in order to show the feeling of liberation. Son of Saul, which is set during the second world war inside a concentration camp, immediately chooses its tone from the start. With a claustrophobic 4:3 format and only having the focus close to the camera, making everything far away blurry, you are glued to the main character, Saul Ausländer (Géza Röhrig). Continue reading
If you have kids then you have the natural instinct to watch them, be there for them and protect them. Nevertheless, from the start you should already slowly let go so that they can learn from the mistakes they make and ultimately spread their wings. However, when you see that the freedom you give them is a bit too much, you’ll have to restrict it again to make it safe.
It is a constant process that I’m constantly working on myself, but the older your children get, the more you realize that you can’t and shouldn’t try to check everything. There is a chance that it all goes incredibly wrong. I regularly read about parents who left their child home alone and they ended up inviting friends who brought alcohol and they had to be hospitalized for alcohol poisoning. With those stories in mind it is important to inform rather than to limit so that you keep talking to each other instead of having a teenager who shuts you out and starts having secrets for you. That is exactly what the main character from Les Cowboys realises. A secret that will affect the whole family deeply. Continue reading
I always liked Ewan McGregor as actor from the moment I saw him in Trainspotting. He’s an actor who doesn’t always play the same type of roles. Because of that he has a varied list of movies to his name. He’s not only in funny comedies, but had a role in Star Wars and has a lot of convincing dramatic roles, for example in The Impossible. When I saw a picture of him with a large beard in this movie set in this Australia I was very curious to see it. Continue reading
If there is one thing which is usually worse than the original, it’s the remake. I often steer clear of them (My Sassy Girl, Old Boy, The Thing), but there are times when my curiosity wins (or loses depending how you look at it) from my instinct (Point Break). During the last couple of years Disney has started remaking their animated classics in the form of live action movies and many are already planned for the coming years (including Dumbo, Pinocchiio, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan). Movies like Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella proved that these movies can be pretty good and now there is The Jungle Book. I can still remember seeing the original cartoon and the songs of that movie I never forgot. Does director Jon Favreau (Chef, Iron Man) succeed in bringing the story to an environment which isn’t drawn? Continue reading
After we saw earlier this year how Batman and Superman battled each other disappointedly within the DC-Universe, it is now Marvel’s turn to do the same in their movies, but on a much bigger scale. As it’s already may I realised that I was starting to get behind on my Blindspot movies as I had only seen two out of the twelve titles I picked. So time to spend some time on watching some more and Pleasantville seemed like a very interesting film. Love can be a beautiful thing and the bond which is shaped between two individuals can be so special that you both feel you have something which if unique. I had heard from Jeux d’Enfants (of Love Me If You Dare) that the two main characters had a very remarkable bond and it was a movie which had been on my to watch list for way too long. That’s also the reason I chose it for my Blindspot series this year. After watching the film I can only agree that Julien (Guillaume Canet) and Sophie (Marion Cotillard) have something I’ve never seen before and that this is a movie which really impressed.
