The Interview (2014)

Review The Interview

If there is one thing The Interview will be remembered for it will be it controversy surround the movie and not the movie itself. During the past few weeks it was reported that Sony had been hacked by a group calling themselves “Guardians of Peace”. They stole a big amount of business sensitive data. This resulted in various movies hitting the internet before their release in cinemas and both internal mails and personal details being published. Threats followed, saying that cinemas showing The Interview could face events that would remember people of 9/11. The hackers group allegedly had ties with North Korea and as the movie is about killing its leader, Kim Jung Un, it would be the reason for the hack.

Initially Sony caved into the demands and issued a statement that the movie wouldn’t be released anymore after all the big American chains pulled out of showing it. Even president Obama responded and said not showing the film wasn’t a wise choice. On Christmas evening though Sony announced that the movie would be available immediately on various VOD platforms like Youtube, Google Play en Xbox. It’s a unique situation that such a “big” movie is offered in such a way to the consumer. The next couple of weeks will show if this strategy has meant financial success for Sony. If that is the case it could open the doors to other studios releasing their movies in this way as well. It would finally give the choice to the consumer to watch the movie at home immediately or head to the cinema. But back to The Interview. Has the controversy about it been valid? Continue reading

In the Blood (2014)

Review In the Blood

Every movie needs a plot as do action movies. In general those plots are usually very simple and only exist in order to string a couple of action scenes together. Whether you are able to enjoy that depends from person to person, but I can forgive a lot when it comes to action. I was able to enjoy movies like Battle L.A. or Battleship even though they generally were hated. I’m not expecting a high quality movie, but just a simple escape from reality letting me forget everything around me for a moment. Still, within the action genre there is a separation in quality. For every A title there are maybe twenty B movies. Unfortunately In the Blood belongs to that last category. Continue reading

Nightcrawler (2014)

Review Nightcrawler

It is fantastic how a movie can transport you. Behind the door of every cinema or after pressing play at home you can feel like you’ve stepped into a different world. A short escape from reality, providing a unique experience you normal won’t be able to feel.

Nightcrawler takes you into the world of the “nightcrawlers”, the men and women who, armed with a police scanner, are searching for accidents and crimes to film and photograph. The goal is to sell the material to either newspapers or news agencies. Continue reading

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)

Time to return to Middle Earth one final time to conclude the story of The Hobbit. Although I wasn’t a fan of the first movie in the trilogy (it was way too slow with not much happening) I thought the second movie delivered what I was expecting, exciting sequences, introduction and development of characters and a finale which had me wanting more. Having not read the book and seeing where the second movie ended, with Smaug on his way to Lake Town, I couldn’t wait to get back into it. Having now seen it i’m not that excited anymore. Continue reading

Pioneer (2014)

Review Pioneer

At the start of the seventies oil is discovered in the North Sea. Norway had difficulty in getting this oil to land and had to do several test dives in order to find out if it was possible to lay a pipe. If they were able to do this it would mean a lot of money for the country. As tests at this depth were never done before, the Norwegians decided to work together with an American company. The Norwegian brothers Petter and Knut are part of the diving team and are the first ones to do a test dive. When a tragic accident takes place at the ocean floor it is Petter who decided to find the cause for it. It is an investigation which becomes more dangerous to him when he seems to discover a conspiracy. Continue reading

Wild Tales (2014)

Review Wild Tales

In general short movies don’t get too much attention and I have to admit I’m guilty of that too. I sporadically might watch one when it is suggested by other blogs, but that’s about it. There are movies though which basically collect a couple and that way manage to get noticed, like Paris and New York, I Love You or Movie 43 (which was horrible). Wild Tales also consists out of various short movies, but is this collection worth checking out? Continue reading

Fury (2014)

review Fury

War is hell and for Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier (Brad Pitt), Boyd ‘Bible’ Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Trini ‘Gordo’ Garcia (Michael Peña) and Grady ‘Coon-Ass’ Travis (Jon Bernthal) that hell comes in the form of a tank they have named “Fury”. The group has been working together for a while, with Wardaddy taking the lead, and they have lived through many horrible situations. The American tanks are weak compared to the German ones and they have witnessed fellow crews finding their death. Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman) has never fought before, has been trained to speed type and has never seen the inside of the tank. Still he is assigned to join these men on the Fury, who aren’t too happy with that. Norman quickly finds out what war is about as the American troups slowly move further into Germany. Secret Window (2004)

Review Secret Window

The work of writer Stephen King has been a great source for various series and movies. I can remember watching them when I was young (for example It and Christine). The most famous movie based on his work is probably The Shining (which King actually doesn’t like). Another movie I strongly remember is The Mist, mainly for its haunting ending. The mysterious and supernatural atmosphere of the movies is something I’m always able to enjoy. Secret Window is also a “Stephen King film” I’ve know about for years, but hadn’t come around to watching. Continue reading

Rob the Mob (2014)

Review Rob the Mob

Sometimes it is hard to imagine how some strange stories have actually happened. Rob the Mob is a good example of that. Every normal person wouldn’t even think about sticking up members of the mob, but that is exactly the plan which Tommy Uva (Michael Pitt) thinks up in order to get money. He wants to execute it together with his girlfriend Rosie (Nina Arianda). Continue reading

Hamlet’s Ghost (2014)

Review Hamlet's Ghost

Throught he years the time travel genre has given us quite a lot exciting movies. Most will probably think of Back to the Future series first, but movies like Timecrimes, Primer, Looper, The Time Machine and Donnie Darko are just a few examples which are also worth checking out. It is one of my favorite genres and when director Walker Haynes asked me if I wanted to check out his time travel movie Hamlet’s Ghost I didn’t hesitate for a moment. Continue reading
