With his new Oats Studio he has released various shorts this year (most around the 20-minute mark), which visually are on the same level as the big blockbusters. If someone asked you to name some long running movie franchises, Resident Evil probably wouldn’t be one you’d think of. Still this movie series started in 2002 and this one is the sixth installment. Despite the fact that these movies didn’t receive many positive review, it managed to appeal to a specific audience and still made more than its production budget back. So The Resident Evil movies might not be well-regarded, but they are known for action, horror elements and of course Milla Jovovich as the protagonist. For the past couple of years I’ve been making a selection of twelve movies for my Blindspot list at the start of the year. Movies which for example have been on my “to watch” list for ages or ones for which I’ve got the feeling I should have seen them at least once as a movie lover. I’ve also made a list for this year and as we’re already in october I noticed that I almost hadn’t watched any of them. So it was necessary to change that so I decided to check out this 1942 movie, by director Ernst Lubitsch. I hadn’t seen any of his previous work, but this one often is named as one of his best. While Marvel Studios keeps making record-breaking movies with their superhero movies, their biggest competitor (DC) can’t seem to hit the same highs. After Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy their titles have almost all received negative scores on Rotten Tomatoes and their attempt at creating their own DC Cinematic Universe seem to fail. Although Wonder Woman (played by Gal Gadot) appeared in Batman v Superman, it was time to show her origin story. In general the shows which Netflix releases are of high quality and often can’t be missed. Unfortunately that isn’t the case for the movies the company has released under its name (with an occasional exception). War Machine looks like an interesting film, with Brad Pitt starring and it’s directed by David Michôd who previously was responsible for the great Animal Kingdom. The movie also has a number of surprising cameos from famous actors and actresses. Is this great Netflix movie? Continue reading
Matt Damon is one of those actors where I basically watch every movie he is in automatically. In general his appearance makes a movie worth watching. When this movie was in the cinemas I decided not to see it as I didn’t find the poster very appealing. Once it was available on DVD I decided to check it out. When director Christopher Nolan releases a new movie you are more less obliged as a movie lover to go watch it as soon as you can. He’s someone who lives and breathes cinema, who won’t go near filming digitally and isn’t a fan of VOD-platforms like Netflix and the way they release movies. Besides that he also likes to do as much of the special effects practically. Although his movies are a joy to watch from a technical perspective, they sometimes feel a bit sterile. For his latest movie he wanted to bring an important seconds world war moment to the big screen: the evacuation of the troops at Dunkirk. Continue reading
The new series of Planet of the Apes movies, which started in 2011 is one of the better franchises in the past few years. Thanks to amazing special effects and strong stories Rise and Dawn were a joy to watch. War for the Planet of the Apes is the end of this trilogy. The amount of new content Netflix puts out is sometimes hard to keep up with. Some weeks ago they released the Netflix Original movie Spectral. It is a science fiction/action movie with supernatural elements. When the army is fighting a war in Slovenia one of the soldiers is killed in a mysterious way by something which isn’t visible to the naked eye. Dr. Mark Clyne (James Badge Dale), a researcher at DARPA, is asked to analyze the event, which was recorded by a special system, and find a solution. Are the things they are seeing advanced camouflage suits or are they dealing with something completely different? Continue reading
‘Ignorance is bliss’ is a phrase I love and one which I try to use as much as possible when it comes to movies. Of course I’m not talking about not knowing history, but about that wonderful feeling when a movie manages to surprise you, wow you and make you enthusiastic. Stepping into a cinema without any knowledge about what you are about to experience for the next two hours is a feeling I cherish, even if the movie ends up being disappointing and doesn’t meet expectations. Before seeing Rogue One I knew very little: it’s a Star Wars prequel about the rebels and has something to do with the Death Star. As this is a Star Wars movie though it came with certain expectations. When I got to the cinema early in the morning to see the film it was still closed and you could sense the feeling of anticipation in the air. Would this movie be able to surprise me as much as The Force Awakens did last year? You can find out in my Rogue One review.. Continue reading
