“Do the right thing”, it is so easy to say, but it is not always easy to make the right choices in your life. There are setbacks which make it hard to make a decision, people who do not share your opinion or oppose you or you may not have what you need to achieve a goal. To occasionally make a choice that you know, deep down, is not the best in the long term, but still yielding results is tempting. But even in a situation where emotions rise, it is a challenge not to go along with it, to keep thinking. What this can lead if this doesn’t happen is something which Spike Lee shows in Do The Right Thing. Continue reading

See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) – Review
When I think of funny linkups between actors in movies, than Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder are two who I always think about. When See No Evil, Hear No Evil appeared on Netflix soem time ago (one I had seen several times in the past) I couldn’t resist to check out the movie once more. Continue reading
Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
Throughout history the term witch has always had a negative image. Wizards were usually good in fairytales, TV shows and movies, but witches were mostly evil. If the society of witches needed an advertisement to change that image then this movie would be perfect for them. The broomstick and black cat are present, but every other thing you might associate with witches will not appear here. As this is a Studio Ghibli film it does posess the animation magic you’d expect from them. Continue reading
Tango & Cash (1989)
After watching Escape Plan I was reminded of another movie where Sylvester Stallone ends up in jail, Tango & Cash. Escape Plan felt a bit like an eighties action movie, but lacked action. Tango & Cash is an eighties movie and offers plenty of action. It starts out with two big chases and introduces the main character Tango (Sylvester Stallone) and Cash (Kurt Russell). They are two of the best cops in the force (who don’t always follow the rules and who don’t get along that great) and with them being the best they both have a lot of enemies. One is a huge drugs and arms dealer who frames them for a murder. They are sentenced and stuck in a jail with corrupt prison guards and criminals they previously sent there. Survival and escape become necessities and if they succeed they will have to find out who is responsible. Continue reading
The Abyss (1989)
The Abyss is a movie which I had not seen before. It tells the story of a diving team that are asked to find a lost nuclear submarine, but find something else they were not expecting. It’s the first of Cameron’s films where he used extensive CGI to tell his story. When you look at the scene in Terminator 2 where the T-1000 goes through the glass of the helicopter you see that this movie allowed it. Cameron’s use of CGI has only increased over the year resulting in the almost complete CGI movie Avatar. Continue reading
Blind Fury (1989)
This poster summarises exactly what you can expect when watching this movie, an action movie with some humour. It’s the kind of action movie that is not being made anymore. Rutger Hauer is Nick Parker (which is a great name for an action hero).
At the beginning of the movie we see Parker walking around aimlessly having lost his sight. He is rescued by some locals (no idea why they would do this) and they for some reason decide to learn him to use a sword and defend himself. It’s a simple but effective setup for the rest of the movie. Continue reading
