It is actually bizarre that it has taken me this long to see this 1991 film. It is a very famous title, which until recently I had never taken the time to see it. Something I should have done much earlier. This film, directed by Ridley Scott, not only works well, but also made me think of a different time when films could only be shot on film. A time when projection in the cinema was still analogue and you could see if a movie had already been screened before. Not that I would want that in the cinemas again, but it evoked a bit of nostalgia. Continue reading

Slacker (1991)
If you’ve been watching for a long time you will have specific expectations. If it’s a comedy of course you’ll expect jokes, but also weird characters or strange situations. The result will not always work, but taking risks when making movies is something I’m able appreciate. Continue reading
Billy Bathgate (1991)
I think everyone knows the situation where you’ve bought a book/game or movie which you bring open, lay down somewhere and not touch it for years. Recently I decided to read a book I bought years ago, The Rough Guide to Gangster Movies. It’s a genre I really enjoy watching so I was looking forward to reading about gangster movies I might not have seen yet.
Although that number turned out to be not that high (as I saw quite a lot of gangster movies from the thirties and forties), there was one title which I had never heard of: Billy Bathgate. Not a title you would immediately associate with gangstermovies, but when I read that Dustin Hoffman, Nicole Kidman, Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci and Bruce Willis all were in it I was wondering why I never heard of it. Defending Your Life (1991)
What would you do if you hear a movie’s name mentioned in the breath as Groundhog Day? I, like many people, love Groundhog day (it’s one of the few movies I’ve ever given a 10), so when Defending Your Life was mentioned in a podcast saying that its concept was worked out in perfection I just had to see it. Since I never heard of it before I was wondering if this would be that hidden treasure that I was now about to unearth and could share with the world. Continue reading
