The best magicians are able to wow you, to do tricks which you are unable to explain. They will feel like true magic because what they do seems impossible. When after that you see a magician who isn’t working at the same level, you quickly notice the moments where he is trying to trick you, making the performance fall apart. The quiz show has been a fixed part of TV programming for years on almost every channel. They are programs which are relatively cheap to make and contestants are easy to find. It was the same during the fifties and in America the show Twenty One was the most popular.
The show had two contestants (a challenger and a defending champion) who both are located in a sound proof booth and can’t see or hear each other. The presenter picks out a random card about a specific subjects and the contestants have to pick for how many points they want to play. The more points you choose, the more difficult the question. The winner is the one who reaches 21 points first. A big scandal related to the show was huge news for a while and could mean the end of the show. That scandal is the focus of this film. Although I have not seen each and every movie Danny Boyle has directed I can say that I’m a fan of his work. I’ve seen movies like 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, The Beach, A Life Less Ordinary and now this one. Shallow Grave could have easily been directed by someone like Hitchcock, because it’s a movie full of suspense and unexpected twists. Continue reading
According to some Ed Wood was the worst director that ever lived. Others might think of Uwe Boll, but I can’t confirm either choice as I haven’t seen any film made by these directors. After watching the movie Ed Wood I actually would like to watch at least on of his movies as I got this “so bad it’s good” feeling about them. Luc Besson is one of France’s most famous directors. He’s responsible for a lot of well-known movies like the Taxi, Transporter and Banlieu 13 series, he wrote the story for From Paris with Love and the Fifth Element. When he had to wait for Bruce Willis (he was doing another movie) to start filming the Fifth Element, he decided to write a script, which resulted in Léon, a story about an assassin who unexpectedly ends up having to take care of a young girl. Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) are two friends who are both dreaming of starting their own worm shop. They try to raise enough money with their work to make their dream a reality. When one of Lloyds female customers “forgets” her briefcase he sees an opportunity to see her, Mary Swanson, again. He really likes her and convinces Harry to join him on a journey to Aspen. They are both extremely stupid which results in extremely funny situations. Continue reading
