Eyeborgs (2009)

What’s the first thought that goes through your mind when you hear the title “Eyeborgs”? For me there were two things:
1. B-movie
2. Associations with the Terminator movies (so some science fiction)
The second point made me decide, despite point 1 to give this movie a chance. My expectations were not very high. The only well-known actor that is part of the cast is Danny Trejo and he’s only in 2 scenes if I remember correctly. Is Eyeborgs a movie worth watching? Continue reading

Life (2009)

When it comes to making documentaries about nature, BBC belongs to the top. Planet Earth, The Life of Mammals, The Blue Planet or documentaries about dinosaurs (Walking with Dinosaurs), they all have been shot beautifully. Life is the next series after Planet Earth and continues with the kind of amazing shots you’d expect. Some of them took years to prepare and it shows. It’s really a stunning series in which many species are shown. Continue reading

Collapse (2009) – A documentary which you have to see

Michael Ruppert, a man who once was a police officer with the LAPD but quit after seeing that the CIA was involved with the drugs trade, set himself a goal to investigate more issues, uncover them and publish them. He did this in his “Into the Wilderness” magazine. Chris Smith was planning to make a documentary about the involvement of the CIA in the drugs trade, but during the interview with Ruppert found out that he had more to tell. Things that were much more important. The end result is very interesting, but also quite unsettling. Continue reading

Mr. Nobody (2009) – Movie of the year?

What are the consequences of the choices you make? That’s the big question that’s asked in Mr. Nobody. It’s 2092 and Nemo Nobody is the last mortal man on earth. The rest of humanity has found a possibility to live forever (it’s not made clear why Nemo is not using it). At age 118 he’s big news as everyone is waiting for his death. A journalist manages to get into his room and ask him to tell about the life he has lived. Nemo starts his story and it seems like he’s not telling about his life, but about several different lives. Continue reading

Even when wars do not leave physical scars, they still can cause mental damage. Colin Farrell is war photographer Mark Walsh, who has been doing this work for years together with his good friend David. When they are working in Kurdistan they see some horrible things. Mark als want to take pictures of the fighting they see, but David wants to return home because his wife is about to give birth. When Mark returns David still is not there. Continue reading

I Love You Philip Morris (2009)

I love you Philip Morris is a very bizarre comedy. The story is based on facts which are sometimes so unbelievable that I really had to check online if the claim that this story is based on the life of Steven Jay Russell was true. Fargo was also supposed to be based on real facts, but later it turned out not to be true. Russell is played Jim Carrey who manages to really act convincingly. He’s not doing he over the top comedy and funny faces he’s well-known for, but subdues those tendencies and shows he can be just as funny. Continue reading

Youth in Revolt (2009)

As is probably already clear when reading the name of the movie, the subject it deals with is growing up and standing up against something, like your parents. Nick Twisp (Michael Cera) is a teenager who, when some things happen at home, has to spend a weekend away from it together with his mother and stepfather. Here he meets Sheeni (Portia Doubleday), the girl of his dreams. When the weekend ends he vows he’ll manage to get back to her by any means necessary. Continue reading

Mystery team (2009)

The Mystery Team has been solving mysteries around their neighborhood ever since they were little. They are only small mysteries, like who drove over a frog and things like that. The team consists of Jason (expert in disguises), Duncan (the boy genius) and Charlie (supposedly the strong one). The boys grow up but still take on new cases. When a little girl ask them to solve a big crime they can not turn her down. Continue reading

Haeundae (2009)

No, the picture above is not from the Day after Tomorrow movie, but from Haeundae, which is a South-Korean disastermovie about a Tidal wave. The Day after Tomorrow had a budget of 125 million. Haeudae didn’t have that much money available, only 11 million dollar (the most expensive South-Korean movie ever made). Does the movie succeed to be convincing despite the relative small budget? Continue reading
