Solomon Kane (2009)

Sometimes I watch movie which I know nothing about. I hadn’t heard anything about Solomon Kane and had only seen one picture, which made it look like a western, so I was curious to see it. The movie turned out to be a movie set in England during the middle ages, so it was a far cry from my expectations.
Solomon Kane is a warrior who meets one of the devil’s helpers who tells him he is there to take him to hell. Kane doesn’t surrender and fights him in order to escape. Continue reading

The Messenger (2009)

Sometimes wars are a necessary evil. You regularly see the images in the news or in movies and sometimes forget that there are men and women who choose to fight in a conflict. One of things that is certain in such a situation is that there will be people who will die fighting. When this happens the army wants to inform the next of kin about it. Of course they want to do this before the next of kin hear it through the news or read it online. For this task messengers are used, who will have to tell the bad news. Captain Tony Stone (Woody Harrelson) and Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery (Ben Foster) are two people who have to perform this difficult job. Continue reading

Old dogs (2009)

Yeah, i know. A movie with John Travolta, Robin Williams (and a small part by Seth Green)…why would you watch that? None of them have made any really good movies lately. But sometimes i feel like watching a comedy where you know it won’t be a very good movie, but do know there will be some laughs. Old dogs is one of those comedies. Continue reading

Crazy Heart (2009)

There are a lot of movies about the lives of musicians. These can be based on real artists (Johny Cash (Walk the line), Edith Piaf (La môme), Ray Charles (Ray)) or made up (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story). This movie is about a made up character, the artist Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges), an old musician who is experiencing the fall of his career. Continue reading

Armored (2009)

Armored is a movie which I knew nothing about. The IMDB scores weren’t very high, so I decided to watch the trailer to check out if it might be worth watching. The trailer starts with a spectacular robbery of a money transport truck which has been filmed very well. So I stopped the trailer and decided to watch the movie. It looked like the perfect movie for a friday night. There are quite a few famous actors in it (Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, Laurence Fishburn), so surely it’s must be an ok movie? Continue reading

Leaves of grass (2009)

In this comedy Edward Norton plays two roles, twins to be exact. He’s not the first actor who does this, example are Nicholas Cage in Adaptation, Jean-Claude van Damme in Double Impact or Arnorld Schwarzenegger in Twi…forget about that last one. Norton manages to show two very different characters with different accents.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day (2009)

The sequel to the 1999 original. Although I had seen the first movie at the time, I can’t remember anything about it anymore. Luckily part 2 has a very brief summary at the beginning of the movie that is sufficient to be able to enjoy this one. At some moments you will probably won’t have an “AHA!” moment, but you’ll still be able to enjoy all the action. Continue reading

Synechdoche, New York (2008)

Charlie Kaufman is well-known for his unique screenplays. Examples of this are Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Synechdoche, New York kan can be added to this. For this movie Kaufman has stepped into the director’s chair.

The movie follows the life of Cayden Cotard (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman). Passage of time goes quickly, sometimes you are years into the future in just a couple of minutes. The movie also contains, although this is not unexpected, a lot of surrealistic elements that start to play a bigger part in the story as the movie progresses. This ends in a very dreamlike state. This isn’t annoying though, as i thought it made this film more exciting for it. If previous Kaufman stories fascinated you, than this one will also have that effect on you.

Black Dynamite (2009)

Black Dynamite is a spoof of the 70’s blaxploitation movies. Black Dynamite himself can be compared with Shaft, with his smooth talking, hip clothes and a nice ride. The set, music and the way the movie has been shot copies the style perfectly. Mistakes have been made on purpose (microphones that appear on-screen, different cars during the same scene when changing the camera angle). If you didn’t know any better you would know for sure that this movie has been made in the seventies. The story is very simple, with Dynamite going for revenge after the death of his brother, but that doesn’t matter when the jokes keep on coming. The M&M’s scene in this movie reminded me of CSI and the way they deduct their conclusions. I won’t say anything more about it, just this: Go see it sucka! Dy-na-mite…Dy-na-mite!

Ninja assasin (2009)

Ninja assassin is a movie which, in theory should have been a great action movie, is very disappointing when put to the test of seeing it. The movie has, despite the special effect, the feeling of a B-movie (in both story and execution).
A fight scene near the end of the movie looks like it has been copied straight out of 300 (including slow motion). The fight scenes have been edited so fast that there is no tension at all and the added effects make them a mess to watch. If you are looking for a movie with a story that is not very special, but does have breath-taking fight scenes, then it’s better to watch a Tony Jaa film like Ong Bak or Tom yum goong.
