Are you an avid chess player? Then you probably will know Bobby Fischer. Personally I didn’t know anything about him, I didn’t know that he was considered to be one of the best chess players who ever lived. He became U.S. champion at the age of 14 and could have been the reigning world champion for years. As this documentary shows, brilliance and being obsessive about something are very close to each other. Continue reading

Superheroes (2011)
Years ago there were hardly any superhero movies (except for Superman). If they were made almost no one went out to see them, but now it is a very succesful genre with a couple of big movies coming out each year. The genre is so big that the limits are also explored resulting in movies like Super, Kick-Ass and Defendor where characters are shown who think they are real superheroes in a real world. Those were still movies though with characters someone made up. Superheroes is a documentary which looks at “real real-life superheroes”. Continue reading
Thor (2011)
Superhero movies, I have to admit I am never really looking forward to any of them although I do watch almost all of them. When I grew up I didn´t read much comics (I stuck to Donald Duck and ´Suske en Wiske´) not having any connection with the characters probably is a good thing as you won´t notice that things are different from the comics. I didn´t think Thor would be a very interesting movie, but when a colleague of mine, who is a big comic book fan, told me how much he enjoyed watching it I had to give this one a chance as well. My review after the break. Continue reading
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
Yes, it is the movie with the title I’ve made most fun of this year. Of course there wouldn’t be any other way to make it clear to the movie going audience that this is a prequel to the classic Planet of the Apes. It has been a couple of years since I last saw that, but that ending is one of those twists that deserves a spot in a list of unexpected endings. After that a couple of sequels were made (which I didn’t watch) and even Tim Burton tried his hand at a remake (which the critics really didn’t like). With that history lesson out of the way the question is whether this prequel is worth checking out. How did those “damn dirty apes” manage to take control of the planet? Continue reading
Win Win (2011)
Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti) is a lawyer who has some trouble keeping his law firm profitable. He hardly gets any new clients and when he sees an opportunity with a client to suddenly get a steady monthly payment he decides to make some decisions which will come back to haunt him. The result of this is that the grandson of the client, Kyle (Alex Shaffer), suddenly appears who has run away from home. Mike is forced to take care of him and try to solve the mess he created. Continue reading
Midnight in Paris (2011)
Woody Allen has been making movies for a long time. He made his first movie, What’s up, Tiger Lily? in 1966 and 35 years later he is still going strong. I’m not always a big fan of his type of humour but I usually give his movies a try. Is Midnight in Paris worth watching? Continue reading
The Tree of Life (2011)
With all the praise The Tree of Life has been getting I just had to check it out for myself, so yesterday made the trip to the cinema if it’s really a masterpiece that can’t be missed.
Terrence Malick doesn’t make a lot of movies, but I must admit that I haven’t seen one of his movies completely. I remember that many years ago I started watching The Thin Red Line, but turned it off as it just couldn’t grab my attention. I was hoping that The Tree of Life would be a different experience. Continue reading
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011)
Just like Michael Moore, Morgan Spurlock is a documentary maker with his own distinct style. Although he isn’t as political he likes to have the camera pointed at him. He always injects his documentaries with lots of humour, which (of course) won’t be everyone’s taste. Personally it’s something I enjoy and liked Supersize Me. Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden wasn’t as good, but I did like his segment in Freakonomics. Now he’s back with The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, where he looks into the world of branding, product placement and advertising in movies. Jimmy Kimmel called it “The Inception of documentaries”, but is it? Continue reading
Your Highness (2011)
“How much money was wasted on this movie?”. That was the question which was constantly going through my mind as I watched this movie set in the middle ages in which two brothers, prince Thadeous (Danny McBride) and prince Fabious (James Franco) go on a quest to save the girl who Fabious will marry. She’s been captured by an evil magician who will take her virginity in order to become extremely powerful. On their journey they are helped by Isabel (Natalie Portman) and with that I’ve told you most of the story.
Your Highness should be a fun movie with the type of humour which was popularised by American Pie, The 40 Year Old Virgin and The Hangover. Unfortunately it fails to deliver something of the same quality. Continue reading
Blitz (2011)
When you watch a movie with Jason Statham, whatever your opinion is about him, you know exactly what to expect. Blitz is no exception to this. As detective sergeant Tom Brant he immediately (at the start of the movie) he beats a couple of criminals to pulp. He’s a cop with a short fuse and this results in regular arguments with his superiors. His knowledge and techniques are needed however when a crazy man starts killing cops. It’s up to him to find the guy. Continue reading
