The Hunt (2012)

With Festen (1998), director Thomas Vinterberg made a very impressive movie. Even though it was shot cheaply on DV cameras it’s story was one you would not be able to forget soon as it’s about a family get together and the dark past of the father of the family who abused his children. With The Hunt Vinterberg again has made a very interesting and provocative movie about abuse, but this one’s about someone who is wrongfully accused of it. Continue reading

Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)

What would you think if you’d see the following ad?

It’s an intriguing one, but the picture would probably make you laugh and think nothing more of it. It does make you wonder though if this guy really was able to time travel. There have been various stories of supposed time travel, but of course nothing which could be proved. This movie is based on this ad and fantasizes what could happen if you’d respond to it. Continue reading

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

I have a confession to make: I’m not a big Wes Anderson fan. Out of all the movies I’ve seen of his there are only two which I enjoyed, which were Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Darjeeling Limited. In general I just can’t connect with all the weird characters which appear in his movies. So I really wasn’t rushing out to see Moonrise Kingdom, but as it has been getting rave reviews I had to find out if this was the third movie I’d like or if I’d better give up on watching his movies. Continue reading

Cosmopolis (2012)

With movies including The Fly, Videodrome, A History of Violence and Eastern Promises director David Cronenberg has built an impressive filmography (currently 39 titles to his name on IMDB) and I’m always interested in what his next movie will be. The first image I saw of it, with Robert Pattinson (who I’ve never seen act before) sitting in the back of the limo looked interesting and although I didn’t immediately head for the cinema to see it, it remained on my “to watch” list. After seeing it though I’m not sure I should have put it on that list. Continue reading

Mansome (2012)

Mansome is the latest documentary from Morgan Spurlock, who is known for his light-hearted way of making documentaries. They are usually more entertaining than informative and if you know this going in they can be very entertaining. This documentary is all about male grooming. What makes a man a man? Continue reading

The Watch (2012)

After watching the very dark Ill Manors I really was in the need for a lighter movie and looking at the movies that were playing at the cinema directly after it I decided to see The Watch. It’s got Ben Stiller in it, so I expected it to provide a funny hour and a half. I had not read reviews of it, so went in completely blind. Was my gamble a waste of time or well worth it? Continue reading

Ill Manors (2012)

When I first saw singer/rapper Plan B perform on a Late Night with Jools Holland I really liked the sound of his music. His second album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks, on which he sings is still a joy to listen to. Ben Drew (his real name) is multi talented though as he also decided to try his hand at writing and directing Ill Manors, a very dark crime movie. Continue reading

Cabin in the Woods (2012)

If you’ve been reading my blog for a longer time, you know that I’m not too fond on watching horror. I wasn’t planning on watching this movie, until I saw it appearing in various lists bloggers were writing about the best movies they watched in the first half of the year. Knowing that Joss Whedon was involved I decided to give it a chance. Continue reading

The Five Year Engagement (2012)

Jason Segel is one of those actors that can really do no wrong in my book and I’ve enjoyed his presence in each movie I’ve seen him in. Ignoring the marketing (it’s usually a bad sign if a movie poster states “From the producer of…” as that says nothing about the quality of this movie) I was looking forward to seeing this movie. Continue reading
