2 Days in New York (2012)

There are various actors who make the step to directing. Ben Affleck and Clint Eastwood are good examples of it. Julie Delpy is an actress who also has appeared both in front of and behind the camera, with 9 directorial movies to her name. 2 Days in New York is a sequel to 2 Days in Paris. I hadn’t seen that one before I saw this, so I didn’t have any expectations or attachment yet to the characters. Starring Chris Rock and Julie Delpy, is this comedy worth checking out? The Dictator (2012)

When it comes to comedy it seems that there is no subject you can’t make jokes about and Sacha Baron Cohen has shown with his various movies that he is excellent at shocking audiences (and making them laugh in the process). Ali G, Borat and BrĂ¼no were all characters that played with stereotypes while commenting on specific things and showing people’s reactions to them. In The Dictator Cohen slips into the role of dictator Aladeen and with this movie he immediately sets the tone by starting it with a dedication to (in loving memory of) Kim Jong Il. Continue reading

The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

So I might be a bit late to the party, but I finally managed to find some time to head to the cinema and see The Dark Knight Rises. The last couple of months the marketing campaign for the movie was in full force and it seemed that there wasn’t a place you wouldn’t read about it. You might not believe me, but I managed to steer clear of most set photos, previews and trailers. So I went in not knowing much about this final part of the Christopher Nolan trilogy. Continue reading

The Lorax (2012)

Even though I’m in my late thirties I’m someone who can still enjoy kids movies and I’m not afraid to admit that. So after the kids went to see this a while ago and loved it so much (one of them said she preferred watching this over one of her favorite movies (Grease)) I was very interested in seeing it as well. Now that I’ve seen it what did I think of it? Continue reading

Nameless Gangster (2012)

When you think of gangster movies you’ll automatically start thinking about movies like The Godfather, Scarface and Goodfellas. They are all movies made quite a while ago. Although Hollywood still produces them they have become a rare breed. The genre is still very alive in South Korea and it has produced some interesting ones that are worth checking out (A Dirty Carnival and A Bittersweet Life come to mind). Nameless Gangster is the type of gangster movie I love where it’s not really about violence (although that is present), but about the relationships between characters. Continue reading

Tony 10 (2012)

review, movie, tony ten

When parents separate it’s something that has a big impact on the children of the family. It’s difficult for them to understand and deal with. Tony 10 is a Dutch kids movie which tries to tackle the subject. It does so in an interesting way telling the story of Tony (who’s almost 10) and who thinks his father is having an affair with the queen. Continue reading

Being Flynn (2012)

Does every writer think he’s the greatest one out there? I guess a lot of them do and Robert de Niro’s character Jonathan Flynn states for a fact that he knows he is. Whether that really is the case you won’t know as you are watching Being Flynn, a movie which tells the story of a father and son, both writers. It really isn’t about the writing though, it’s about their broken relationship and the effect that can have on a person. Continue reading

Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap (2012)

review

Yesterday was the European premiere of this documentary directed by Ice-T. As I’ve been listening to rap close to 20 years I was excited to see this. Just looking at the trailer you will be amazed by the amount of well-known rappers that have participated in the making of this movie about their style of music. Ice-T interviews rappers who were there when it all just started, people like Afrika Bambaata, Doug E. Fresh and Melle Mel, but also artists whose star rose during the nineties (Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Treach from Naughty By Nature etc) and early start of this century (Kanye West, Eminem).

The documentary which was shown simultaneously in various countries with a live Q&A session streamed to the cinema I was in afterwards (which was also attended by Chuck D, Raekwon and Melle Mel, who all performed) held at the Apollo in London. So as a big fan of hip hop, what did I think of The Art of Rap? Continue reading

Chronicle (2012)

I remember having vivid dreams when I was younger in which I had the ability to start flying just by willpower and having the feeling that I finally had the feeling I knew how to do it. Of course I ended up in being disappointed when I woke up and couldn’t. It’s a dream I assume a lot of people have and Chronicle takes the idea of such a dream and makes it a reality. What would you do? Continue reading
