Elysium (2013)

Review of the science fiction movie Elysium starring Matt Damon

Ever since watching Neil Blomkamp’s District 9 I couldn’t wait to see what he would be doing next as he was able to tell an amazing story in a sci fi setting. With Elysium, starring Matt Damon, he retuns to sci fi. Will he be able to tell an exciting story again? Continue reading

Obstruction 3: Pacific Rim (2013)

So because I was on a holiday and had some things on my mind afterwards I was not able to write my review for this obstruction earlier. Since I am very short on time (only 2 hours left) I’m going to have to keep this review short:

Review of Pacific Rim (2013)

We always think that aliens will come from the stars, but it turns out they come from a portal in deep Pacific. The plot (yes there IS one, in case some of you are wondering) is nothing we’ve never heard before but it’s played out quite efficiently here. the earth starts getting periodically attacked by huge monsters (Kauji – a term for Japanese monster movies), so humanity pulls together and builds equally massive robots (Jaegers) to fight back. Continue reading

Only God Forgives (2013)

While on holiday in South America recently I decided to watch Only God Forgives on my tablet. Late at night while the temperature was still very high, the mosquitoes were enjoying my feet (something I only realised after I finished watching this movie). It turned out to be good atmosphere though for watching this latest movie from director Nicolas Winding Refn. Continue reading

Sharknado (2013)

There are times when specific movies can become a hype. Thanks to the internet a movie like Snakes on Plane got to keep its name and for the last couple of weeks Sharknado seemed to be the movie of the moment. Even though it’s a made for TV movie on the SyFy channel it even played in theaters for a limited time. With its title it leaves no question what it is about (as the tagline says “Enough said”), but is it worth your time? I decided to take the plunge. Continue reading

Monsters University (2013)

Review of Monsters University (2013)

Monsters Inc was the 4th movie which Pixar made in 2001. The story about monsters who scared children at night to generate energy for their own world was a big hit. The main characters of the movie, Sully (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) had a believable connection en the little girl in the movie, Boo, won over many hearts. The movie also brought new technical implementation with realistically simulating Sully’s hair en Boo’s clothing. With Monsters University Pixar returns to this world. The question is whether this prequel will manage to reach the high bar set by Monster Inc. Continue reading

Europa Report (2013)

Review of Europa Report

Not too long ago I reviewed Red Planet, which I quite liked up till the moment that some unnecessary elements were added (like a robot turned enemy). I wished that it would have just been about the survival of the crew and with Europa Report it seems that this is the movie I wanted to see. In this case the journey does not go to Mars, but to a moon of Jupiter. So the story is of the type I would like to see, but question is: Is it any good? Continue reading

The Bling Ring (2013)

Review of The Bling Ring

Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan. They are just a few names of people which form a daily source of news and gossip. You can read exactly what they are doing, where they went shopping and what kind of issues they have. Every outfit they where is analyzed and there are always enough stylists available to give their opinion about what they wear. A couple of those “stars” have not done a lot to be called that (for example the first two women became the middle of attention just because of their sex tapes). It is something I never understood. It is unbelievable that people with so little talent have become icons which everyone would seem to want to read about and even emulate. Still there are a lot of young people (and older ones too) who are very willing to spend a lot of money on a specific bag or a shoe because someone they look up to also has it. It is a form of materialism where a person hopes that having that item gives them status. The Bling Ring is about a group of young people, who would love to live the life of a star en instead of buying the items simply break into the houses of the stars to take what they want. Continue reading

Trance (2013)

Review of the movie Trance

Danny Boyle to me is one of the most interesting directors around. Looking at his filmography the movies he has directed are all very different in subject matter. Movies he has made include Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours. Trance is the next movie in his impressive career and the concept of this movie is an original one and could have easily been a Hitchcock movie with secrets deeply locked away somewhere needing to be uncovered. Continue reading

Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

Review of Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerard Butler

As a man you sometimes need to see a movie which feeds your primal instincts. A movie which is raw and visceral and packs a punch. Movies like Rambo and The Raid satisfy that need and show that you don’t need a lot of background story to do so. Olympus Has Fallen’s Rambo is Mike Banning, played by Gerard Butler. He is a former bodyguard of the president, who had to stop his service because something which happened in the past. The setting here is the White House and the bad guy is current Hollywood favorite, North Korea. Continue reading

Behind the Candelabra (2013)

Behind the Candelabra review with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas

During the high point of his career pianist Liberace was the highest paid entertainer in the world. His shows, just as his outfits, were extravagant and flamboyant. He was extremely popular and kept his public image under control. He made sure that nobody saw his private side as he knew that if people knew he was gay that he would lose a big part of his fans. With Behind the Candelabra director Steven Soderbergh looks into that private life. Continue reading
