Brooklyn (2015) – Review

Review Brooklyn

That the world is constantly changes will surprise no one, but sometimes I wonder how we would treat each other if we didn’t have the constant distractions of Twitter, Facebook and various other apps. The latest news, from anywhere in the world, we are able to read within minutes from it happening and kind messages we read, but usually forget within a couple of minutes. The “romance” of communication seems to have disappeared. No longer have to sit next to a phone waiting for a call until someone calls you, no longer making appointments somewhere and waiting for them to show or taking pictures during a holiday and waiting until they are developed when you get home. These are moments I sometimes miss and Brooklyn is a movie which only made that feeling stronger. Continue reading

Demolition (2015) – Review

Demolition recensie

If we are really honest with ourselves, would there be parts of our lives we would change if we wouldn´t think about the consequences? Would you still work for the same employer? Stay in your relationship? Change your daily routine? We all have sometimes wonder about these questions, but we rarely make big choices which change our lives drastically. Sometimes we won´t face facts and have the feeling we have invested too much energy into something to get out of it. But what would happen if we did not hide our interests and desires and follow them completely? That is exactly what Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) does in Demolition. Continue reading

The Program (2015) – Review

The Program review

Some people are willing to do anything to reach the top of their game and stay there. This is also the case within sports and through the years there have been controversial moments in various sports relating to performance enhancing drugs. Whether it is track and field, baseball or football, there are always a couple of athletes who thinks it is necessary to use something to beat the rest.

But one of the sports which has been hit hardest was cycling. Year after year the cyclists were caught using doping, slowly resulting in a decreasing number of viewers and huge sponsors have decided to stop giving money to the sport. The most notorious cyclists of course is Lance Armstrong, who thanks to uising drugs succeeded in winning the Tour de France seven times. He was someone who kept insisting that he wasn’t using anything and when the truth finally became known had to go through hell. Continue reading

The Revenant (2015) – Review

review The Revenant

Although I personally was not a fan of Birdman, the previous film by Alejandro González Iñárritu, I think he is a director whose films I’m always interested in seeing. Babel impressed me and his 21 Grams is in my top 100 favorite movies. On a technical level he has grown a lot and through his collaboration with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (who worked on movies like Gravity, Children of Men, Birdman and The Tree of Life) you are assured of visual splendour. The Revenant is certainly no exception. Continue reading

City of Gold (2015) – Review

review City of Gold

Jonathan Gold is a fascinating man. He grew up in Los Angeles, where he listened to a lot of classical music and opera. He had an obsession for the cello. He also witnessed the riots in L.A. and saw tanks driving through the streets. Now he is known as the most well-known food critic of the city, but he also was present in the studio when Dr.Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg were making the hip hop classic Doggystyle. He won a Pulitzer price for his restaurant reviews and you could name him the Roger Ebert of the culinary world, a man who is able to describe the ideas, motivation and feelings behind a dish in almost a poetic way, simply by tasting it. He’s also the subject for this documentary, City of Gold. Continue reading

An (2015) – Review

Review An

Japan is a country which has always fascinated me. Not only because of technology, but also the culture and nature. A couple of years ago (partly inspired by seeing Lost in Translation) I decided to go on a holiday there and it still is the best one I’ve ever had and one I fondly remember. During three weeks I travelled the country and enjoyed the busy cities, the wonderful architecture of the old buildings and gardens, the beautiful landscapes and of course the great food. And because I didn’t know the language I didn’t always know what I exactly bought for lunch. One of them was a bun filled with beans, which I really didn’t like. But after seeing An I was curious to know if maybe I didn’t buy one which was made with as much passion as the ones in this film. Continue reading

Everest (2015) – Review

Review Everest

We all, in one way or another, are looking for boundaries. Of course as a kid we often go past boundaries set by our parents, but in life we also try new things to test ourselves. We want to see what we are willing to do, to face a challenge. How far someone goes with that is different for everyone. I never felt the need to tie a huge elastic band to my feet and jump of a bridge, but a lot of people need that shot of adrenaline and some go even further. Some don’t seem to realize that they are gambling with their life, because I don’t understand what motivates them. This was also the case for me with Everest. Continue reading

As I Open My Eyes (2015) – Review

Recensie As I Open My Eyes

Film is a powerful medium to convey certain ideas or situations in a sensitive and subtle way to others. It can open eyes because it shines light on the dark past of a country (for example The Act of Killing ) or results in changes (such as Blackfish). In recent years there were several revolutions in various countries in the Middle East. Not all of them have achieved the desired result, but it has showed the world how powerful it can be when everyone speaks up. Tunisia also belonged to those countries and it is the place where this film takes place, on the eve of Tunisia’s Jasmine Revolution. Continue reading

Experimenter (2015) – Review

Review Experimenter

People are sometimes like cattle, mindlessly following others, capable of anything. You don’t only see this through specific behaviour in the past or in the news, but also various experiments have confirmed this. When it comes to social psychology there are a couple which are well-known, where especially the Stanford-prison experiment and Milgram’s experiment are notorious. Power corrupts and commands are often followed. 2015 produced movies about both of them. There isthe Standford Prison Experiment (and previously The Experiment). Experimenter tells Milgram’s story about the experiment that made him famous. Continue reading

The Beauty Inside (2015) – Review

Review The Beauty Inside

How important is you appearance to you? For many people it will be a very important deciding thing, because it plays an important role in the first impression you make on others. It also will influence how you feel about yourself. In the entertainment and fashion industry it seems the only thing you are judged on and where getting older isn’t allowed. But what would happen if you couldn’t do anything about your appearance? What would happen if you woke up inside a different body each day? That’s the reality the main character in this movie, Woo-Jin, faces. r
