Lila & Eve (2015)

Lila & Eve review

The loss of a child is one of the worst things you can experience as a parent and unfortunately that is exactly what Lila (Viola Davis) experiences. Her son is shot during a drive by shooting. She decides to go to a meeting where for mothers who have experienced the same. Although she doesn’t like to talk she meets Eve (Jennifer Lopez), who lost her daughter. The two get along great, help each other and after a while decide to take action themselves and do the work the police doesn’t do…and more. Continue reading

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015)

Review Hunger Games Mockingjay part 2

Although I’m definitely not the target audience for young adult movies (even though I still feel like I’m young), I can still appreciate them. And just like in every genre there are good and bad movies. I quite enjoyed the first film in this series, but the sequels didn’t manage to convince me as much. Mockingjay Part 1 felt empty and not much seemed to be happening. After 3 movies it’s finally time for the last part. Does it manage to recapture the excitement of the first film? Continue reading

Trainwreck (2015)

Review Trainwreck

Although Amy Schumer is already well-known for some time in the US, I hadn’t heard of her. She’s a stand-up comedian who has her own Comedy Central show, Inside Amy Schumer and Trainwreck is her first starring role in a feature-length movie. For this movie she has worked with Judd Apatow, who was previously responsible for successful comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up. The question is whether the combination is successful or if its, like the title, a trainwreck. Continue reading

The Wolfpack (2015)

Review The Wolfpack

Just imagine that as a kid you would hardly be allowed to leave your house, at most five times a year (some years once). What would your image of the outside world be if it was almost completely based on the movies you have in your house? You can imagine that the more extreme situations you see in movies were what was really happening in the world. You would assume that the outside world is an extremely dangerous place. For the seven children of the family Angulo that was their reality for years. This documentary shows what kind of impact this has had on them. Continue reading

What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015)

Recensie What happened, Miss Simone

Nina Simone is a name many people will recognize. The singer had hits with songs like “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Feeling Good” and “Is not Got No, I Got Life”. They are songs that I know, but I knew nothing of the artist behind them. This Netflix documentary shows what kind of life Nina Simone had, which is a lot darker than you’d expect. Continue reading

Sergio Herman: Fucking Perfect (2015)

Recensie Sergio Herman Fucking Perfect

Food doesn´t only fills the stomach, but it’s also emotion. It can bring you back to a particular moment in your life. The way a meal is presented, the service and the ambience of the place you eat are all factors that contribute to the experience of eating. Like no other Sergio Herman understands this and his restaurant Oud Sluis received three Michelin stars and a perfect score of twenty out of twenty of Gault Millau. As a chef he´s at the top, but Herman was looking for a new challenge and decided to take a drastic step and close his highly awarded restaurant Oud Sluis. Continue reading

Spectre (2015) – Review

Review Spectre

The James Bond franchise is one of the longest running ones in movie history. With its 24th movie, there still is a huge audience wanting to see 007. It’s a character that’s still appealling. This does mean that the world in which it is set needs adjusting once in a while to remain relevant. When Daniel Craig took over the baton from Pierce Brosnan in Casino Royale the series moved away from the weird gadgets en the secret agent lived in a realistic world which was a whole lot darker. Het became a man with feelings who was in real danger. Despite the fact that its sequel, Quantum of Solace, wasn’t as good it was Skyfall (with it’s winks to the past) and an impressive bad guy which won over the hearts of both the public and the reviewers. Does Spectre manage to do the same? Continue reading

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

Review Mission Impossible Rogue Nation

If you know a bit about Steve Jobs, than you are probably familiar with his “reality distortion field”, which he used to convince others that something which seemed impossible still could be done. In my opinion Tom Cruise is also able to use that same technique showing in Mission Impossible movies that he is able to execute great stunts, using them to win over the hearts of moviegoers. The latest Mission Impossible film, Rogue Nation was heavily promoted, showing him hanging on the side of a plane that is about to take off. Does Tom Cruise succeed again in keeping the attention of his audience Continue reading

Southpaw (2015)

Review Southpaw

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of those actors I’ll blindly watch any movie of. Last year he was amazing in Nightcrawler, for which he lost a lot of weight. In Southpaw he plays a boxer and he has gained a lot of weight giving him an impressive muscular appearance. This film was originally meant as the second big film for rapper Eminem after 8 Mile. The story was based on the issues he was dealing with the last few years, with boxing as a metaphor for it. When Eminem decided to focus on his music he was replaced by Gyllenhaal (Eminem is present on the soundtrack though). Continue reading

Carol (2015)

review Carol

Past weekend the 13th PAC festival was held in the Pathé cinemas in The Netherlands. It is held twice a year and have been visiting for a couple of years now. Each time it is held various quality movies are shown which will be released here in a couple of weeks or months. It makes going worth your time, also because the movies are the ones you might not pick out yourself if you had the chance to. The atmosphere during that day is always nice as you are sharing the same experience with a big group of people from 10 in the morning till 11 in the evening. This time Carol was the opening movie, starring Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchetta which is based on the novel The Price of Salt. Continue reading
