Un homme à la hauteur (2016) – Review

Review Un Homme a la Hauteur

At which point did our society change? In the nineties we were talking about it being a melting pot of cultures, something we were proud of. When did it became a reality that we focussed more and more on our differences? A focus which has made it “not done” to make jokes about each other and where each small remark is immediately approached negatively? Whether you like it or not, it is something which influences you as well and also makes you over sensitive which I think is a shame because it means that the love which first made us blind has slowly disappeared. Warcraft (2016) – Review

Review Warcraft

Before watching Warcraft my expectations of this film weren’t very high. The couple of pictures I saw of it didn’t really make it look appealing and as it is also based on a game chances were big that it wasn’t good. Gamemovies in general aren´t known for quality and the genre hasn´t delivered a film which managed to surprise (in a positive way). Still, looking at the director, I had some hope. Duncan Jones has been responsible for the impressive Moon, so he might be able to deliver a quality film. Continue reading

The Jungle Book (2016) – Review

Review the Jungle Book

If there is one thing which is usually worse than the original, it’s the remake. I often steer clear of them (My Sassy Girl, Old Boy, The Thing), but there are times when my curiosity wins (or loses depending how you look at it) from my instinct (Point Break). During the last couple of years Disney has started remaking their animated classics in the form of live action movies and many are already planned for the coming years (including Dumbo, Pinocchiio, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan). Movies like Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella proved that these movies can be pretty good and now there is The Jungle Book. I can still remember seeing the original cartoon and the songs of that movie I never forgot. Does director Jon Favreau (Chef, Iron Man) succeed in bringing the story to an environment which isn’t drawn? Continue reading

Cooked (2016) – Series review

Review Cooked Netflix

If you were to look at the picture above you might assume that Netflix has now started offering cooking shows, but this isn’t the casse. After the success of Chef’s Table, which was a beautiful show that focussed on various chefs all over the world, it now has Cooked available. This four part documentary series has been made by writer Michael Pollan and filmmaker Alex Gibney (Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine, The Armstrong Lie, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief) and isn’t about restaurants, top chefs or a specific way of cooking. It is about food in general and makes links to the basic elements: fire, air, water and earth and the effect they have on our daily meals. Continue reading

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) – Review

Batman v superman review

When I heard that there would be a Batman versus Superman movie my heart didn’t start racing at all. Even though the Christopher Nolan Batman movies were worth watching, the last two Superman movies didn’t impress. The fact that Zack Snyder was responsible for Man of Steel and also would be directing this one didn’t make me feel euphoric.

Then I started to think about the central point of this movie. If these two superheroes would fight each other would there be any question about who would win? One is a rich guy with some gadgets and the other one an alien with superpowers who only has one weakness which is kryptonite. Despite all my concerns though I did decide to see the movie, because I expected Snyder wanted to prove himself after the criticism he got for Man of Steel. Besides that the studio behind the movie needs a hit and also show the DC universe is worth checking out as well. Continue reading

London Has Fallen (2016) – Review

Review London Has Fallen

London Has Fallen is a ridiculous movie. One which is filled with moments that are unbelievable or happen because of extreme coincidences. Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler are back again for this sequel to Olympus Has Fallen as the American president and his bodyguard. This time it isn’t the White House which is attacked, but as you might guess, London.

All the world leaders head to the city after the prime minister has unexpectedly passed away. And just before the ceremony is about to start and all the heads of state are still on their way, terrorist attacks happen all over town which according to the film must have taken years to plan, but which in reality are completely unbelievable. If you were to believe this movie central London has been flooded by terrorist who have infiltrated security forces everywhere and know exactly where each of the world leaders can be found and targeted. Continue reading

National Parks Adventure (2016) – Review

National Parks Adventure review

Omniversum might be one of the most unique cinemas in the Netherlands, with its dome shape it has an IMAX screen which you won’t be able to see completely, no matter where you sit. It makes watching a movie a real experience. The last time I visited this cinema was back when I was a little boy. Which movie I saw there I can’t remember, but I recall a scene in which was shot from inside a driving car and the experience made me a bit nauseous. Last week it was the first time I went back for the presentation of the newest movie which is now playing there: National Park Adventure. Continue reading

Deadpool (2016) – Review

Deadpool review

A complaint I’ve been hearing more and more about superhero movies, is that they are all alike. Of course that is partly true, but you’d be able to say the same thing about comedies or action movies. It is a genre which has grown enormously the last couple of years and with so many movies it’s easy to see the similarities. Still I think that there is enough variation. If you look at a movie like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is like a cold war thriller, is it something completely different from a Batman movie or shows like Jessica Jones or Daredevil.

Of course they all have strong protagonists who have to battle evil, but that’s the foundation of the genre. If you take a close look at the details, the nuances you can see….oh, wait a minute, this is the intro I was going to use for the next superhero movie review, but as this is a review of Deadpool forget about all of that. This is not a superhero movie like you are used to. Continue reading

Thy Father’s Chair (2016) – Review

Review Thy Fathers chair
