The Mars Generation (2017) – Review

Review The Mars Generation

It’s already more than fifty years ago that Lance Armstrong set foot on the moon for the first time. Thanks to the cold war America wanted to prove it was superior, which drove it to innovate. If you look at the period afterward you’ll notice that there have been some developments, but the human race really hasn’t reached a new goal when it comes to space. Yes, the ISS space station was built and private companies like Elon Musks SpaceX have made big strides to make it all cheaper, but we haven’t made a journey further into space. But there are a lot of young people who think they will be the first people who will be on a mission to Mars. In this documentary a group of them is followed while they participate in Space Camp at NASA. Continue reading

Alien: Covenant (2017) – Review

Review Alien Covenant

The original Alien franchise for a long time had been an unknown series when it came to my movie knowledge. Although I had bought the beautiful DVD-set with the Xenomorph head in 2006, it would take four years before I started watching them for the first time. The first movie made a big impression because of it sublime buildup with constant tension and where you felt the fear the crew was going though. The sequel was completely different but also good, but it was the original which conquered a special place in my heart. Part 3 and 4 couldn’t manage to leave a lasting impression and it would take until 2012 (let’s forget Alien vs Predator) before a new Alien movie came out in the form of Prometheus. Although many didn’t like the film, I really liked it because of the search it started. Where did humanity come from? That was the question the crew of the Prometheus was trying to answer and although it never was fully answered I hoped that Alien: Covenant would. Continue reading

xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) – Review

Review xXx: Return of Xander Cage

During his career Vin Diesel has played various characters, but he’s mainly an actor who has been successful as an action star in his Fast & Furious and Riddick movies and the extreme sports version of James Bond: xXx. The first movie in the franchise was bizarre but enjoyable and in the sequel his role was played by Ice Cube. As the title already implies Diesel is back (after 15 years). Does that result in a film worth watching? Hell yes. Continue reading

Get Out (2017) – Review

Review Get Out

Sometimes there are these movies which are part of a genre you don’t like, but where you have heard so many great stories about that you jsut have to give that a chance. To me that was the case with Get Out, which is part of the horror genre (which I don’t really like). When I recently talked to a fellow blogger he made a comparison to a Hitchcock movie. As that’s one of my favorite directors as he was all about building suspense I just had to see Jordan Peele’s film. And I don’t regret I did that! Continue reading

Logan (2017) – Review

Review Logan

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m getting older, but I notice that it’s usually not a good idea for me to see a movie at the cinema when it’s late in the evening. In general I go and see movies when I have a day off or during the day in weekends, but when I visit a showing late at night it will happen once in a while that I can’t keep my eyes open during the whole movie. It doesn’t matter whether the film is a moving drama or filled with action, I sometimes just nod off. It doesn’t mean I sleep during the whole movie, but I will miss between one and five minutes. So I decided I wouldn’t review a movie when that happens as I can’t form a complete opinion about it as I might have missed a key moment. When I saw Logan late at night everything seemed to go fine, but halfway through the movie I was gone again. As the reviews were mainly positive and what I saw didn’t really convince me completely I blamed it on sleeping. So later I headed to the cinema again to watch it a second time. Did that change my opinion? Continue reading

I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (2017) – Review

Review I Don't Feel at Home in this world anymore

You are familiar with them, those small, daily frustrations. A colleague or roommate who didn’t clean up, people in the supermarket who pretend they don’t see you when rushing to the register to get ahead of you or that other driver who was driving behind you when two lanes have to merge, but still tries to get in front of you once you have merged. Depending on your state of mind you either let it slide or let it get to you. For Ruth (Melanie Lynskey) those type of moments keep piling up. When she comes home and finds out that a burglary took place and the police states that there isn’t much they can do, she has had enough. Continue reading

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) – Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 review
There are characters on the silver screen you love to spend time with and which you look forward to returning. Of course baby Groot is one of them, but so is the rest of the crew in Guardians. A group which was forced together through circumstances and which managed to win the hearts of movie audiences. With its humour, nostalgia for the eighties, strong soundtrack and lots of action that wasn’t a surprise. All those ingredients are present as well for this sequel. So if you have seen the original you probably won’t even hesitate going to the cinema to find out what adventures await the guardians this time. Continue reading

Kong: Skull Island (2017) – Review

Recensie Kong Skull Island

To me the original 1933 King Kong remains the ultimate King Kong movie, one which was way ahead of its time. Despite its age and many other films which has depicted this prehistoric monster it is still great to watch. When watching monster movies you can only hope for characters to survive, because there realistically isn’t anything which can stop them. That’s also the case for the creatures in Kong: Skull Island (which you could call the real “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) Continue reading

The LEGO Batman Movie (2017) – Review

Recensie The Lego Batman movie

The first Lego movie was to many a very pleasant surprise. Its title song “Everything is awesome” dug a way into your skull and remained there for days. The movie itself was filled with humour, unexpected cameos and an original story. Based on that everyone was looking forward to a sequel, which has come into the form of The Lego Batman movie, in which the superhero (who also had a part in the previous Lego movie) is the center of attention. Although we haven’t had a shortage of movies starring Batman the last couple of years, not all of them were good (Batman v Superman anyone?). Do the Lego bricks manage to charm again? Continue reading
