If you’d ask me about movies where the Testosteron levels are high I’d probably come up with movies like 300 and this movie series. They are the type of film where the ingredients are simple: action and violence. Primal instincts. Even thought the men in the Expendables 3 aren’t the youngest ones, this doesn’t mean they take it easy to enjoy their old age. Even though I wasn’t too impressed with both the first and second movie I still enjoy seeing these actors on screen. For a couple of them I still check out each new movie they are in (Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Statham). Do they manage to impress in this third outing? Continue reading

Sabotage (2014)
When you grow up watching action movies starring actors like Jean-Claude van Damme, Steven Seagal, Sylvester Stallone en Arnold Schwarzenegger, then action-DNA automatically pumps through your blood. Because of that I have kept watching movies by some of these actors despite them slowly going towards their seventies. Of course this means you can not expect the same movies as when they were younger, but with Sabotage Schwarzenegger still delivers a violent action thriller. Does that mean nostalgic feelings or disappointing melancholy? Continue reading
Escape Plan (2013)
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were two of the biggest action stars on the planet during the eighties and early nineties. Both have a lot of entertaining movies to their name and the two always made small jokes about each other in their movies (for example in Demolition Man you hear that Schwarzenegger was president, in Last Action Hero there is a poster of Terminator 2 with Stallone as the cyborg).
During that time the two didn’t appear together on-screen, but they did work together in setting up the Planet Hollywood chain. It would not be until The Expendables that the two shared the screen. For action movie fans it was comparable to De Niro and Pacino finally working together in Heat. It was only a short scene, but in The Expendables 2 it was expanded more. Still a true Schwarzenegger/Stallone movie still had not been made, until now with Escape Plan. Continue reading
The 6th Day (2000)
A while ago I really felt like revisiting Schwarzeneggers Last Action Hero. I ordered the DVD and it came with another movie of his, The 6th Day. Having seen it now I’m still not completely sure if I had seen it before, but if I had I had forgotten almost all of it. Continue reading
Last Action Hero (1993)
Recently Empire magazine did an article on The Last Action Hero, which apparently was a big flop when it was released. It had an estimated budget of $85 million and didn’t make back the money after it’s run in the US. Of course its worldwide release made sure it made more than that, but it didn’t perform as the studio was expecting. I remember seeing it when it came out in the cinema and actually really liked it. Of course I was much younger then, so it was time for a revisit. Continue reading
The Many Faces of… Arnold Schwarzenegger
Welcome to a new installment in the “The Many Faces of…” series, where each week I take a look at all the roles an actor did. I decided that as I’m a big action movie fan it was time to also shine the spotlight on an action star. He might not be the best actor in the world, but Arnold Schwarzenegger has screen presence and it’s always a joy to watch his movies.
Before starting his movie career he was a very successful bodybuilder, winning his first Mr. Universe title when he was 20 and continued winning for several years. After he was done with the sport he wanted to become an actor, which initially was difficult because of his unusual body, his accent and long name. He persisted and finally got his big breakthrough with his role in Barbarian. Through the years he grew into one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood. Continue reading
Predator (1988)
There are always movies that everybody seems to have seen, except for yourself. For me Predator is one of those movies. When it came out I wasn’t allowed to watch these type of movies yet, but lot of my friends did see it. So I missed out on being able to talk about it then. Over the years I really didn’t really think about it watching it, but I was always interested in seeing it. So did this turn out as disappointment or was it as fun as I imagined? Continue reading
Pumping Iron (1977)
Before Arnold Schwarzenegger became a big action star, he already had a succesful career as a body builder, winning Mr. Olympia five times. In Pumping Iron we see him in 1975 during his final year as a professional body builder where he tries to win the title again. Bodybuilding and fitness wasn’t very popular yet, but director George Butler wanted to show this subculture. With Schwarzenegger as the main focus he had chosen a very interesting person with lots of character, making Pumping Iron a very interesting documentary to watch. Continue reading
