There are times when you are endlessly browsing through Netflix when you come across titles which don’t ring any bells. Parallels is one of those, where I didn’t know the actors either. If someone would hand you a piece of paper and would tell you that you’d have a minute to write down a poem, would you be able to write one that makes sense? What if you didn’t have the piece of paper and had to think of something on the spot. It would need to rhyme, have a rhythm and a flow, would you be able to do that? This is the world of the freestyle, in which rappers show how quickly they can think, say it and at the same time tell a story. It’s something which takes a lot of practice and when you are thinking of the next thing to say your mind is in a different place compared to what your mouth is doing (saying something you already thought up). Stuck in Rio de Janeiro with no money there is only one way to earn something and this is by doing a car related heist. Unfortunately not everything goes as planned and the crew make a plan which will allow them to escape the authorities and also get rid of one of Rio’s biggest drug bosses. Continue reading
After the fantastic Gone Baby Gone (which I gave an 8 ) Ben Affleck is back with his second movie in the director’s chair. Just like that movie, this movie is also set in Boston, where Affleck grew up. During this movie a lot of bank heists take place in the city and Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck), James Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Albert ‘Gloansy’ Magloan (Slaine) and Desmond Elden (Owen Burke) are one of the gangs responsible for them. These bank robberies are meticulously planned and the gang is very precise and professional in their execution. They wear latex gloves, are unrecognisable because of their masks and destroy any evidence that could be used against them (like putting the harddisks that are used for the surveillance cameras in the microwave) Continue reading
Land of the Lost was a series for children that ran on NBC from 1974 until 1976 and we have seen the last couple of years, Hollywood likes looking at old shows to use as a basis for a movie. Recent examples are Starsky and Hutch, Miami Vice, Dukes of Hazard or the A-Team. So Land of the Lost is one that can be added to the list. The thing with this movie is that to me it was very unclear which kind of audience the movie caters to, because there were a lot of things in the movie that are not aimed at children, but at the same time there isn’t much to enjoy for grown-ups either. Don’t be fooled by the picture I’ve added above, it may look spectacular, but in reality it will dissapoint you. Continue reading
Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is a very succesful Canadian businesswoman working in Amerika. She rules her department as a dictator. Everyone is afraid of her and she has almost no personal contact with other people. Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) is her assistant and is forced to deliver perfection because if he doesn’t he will lose his job.
When her boss tells Margaret that she is losing her work permit for the US, which would force her to go back to Canada, she already sees the career she worked so hard for disappear. That is until she tells her boss that she can stay in the US as she’s marrying Andrew (who is just as surprised as everyone else about this news). Andrew doesn’t see any other solution than to play along with this. When an INS agent shows up to check on their relationship they are forced to act as if they are a couple. Continue reading
This poster summarises exactly what you can expect when watching this movie, an action movie with some humour. It’s the kind of action movie that is not being made anymore. Rutger Hauer is Nick Parker (which is a great name for an action hero).
At the beginning of the movie we see Parker walking around aimlessly having lost his sight. He is rescued by some locals (no idea why they would do this) and they for some reason decide to learn him to use a sword and defend himself. Following is Christopher Nolan’s (Memento, Inception) first movie he wrote and directed. It has been made on a very small budget and took months to film as all the actors had day jobs and were only available during the weekends. After Nolan’s house was burgled he wondered what a burglar is thinking while he is walking through a house and sees things like pictures or items. Following is the execution of this idea.
Bill is a writer who randomly follows people on the streets. He slowly starts to get addicted to it and becomes obsessed by it. It slowly turns him into a stalker and one of the guys he is following notices this and start talking to him. Turns out that guy is a burglar and Bill is so fascinated by this that he asks if it is possible to join him to see how he does his job. It doesn’t stop with just watching and Bill keeps passing his own moral boundaries. Continue reading
The life of a ghost writer (someone who writes books, speeches or lyrics for others) isn’t easy. No one is allowed to know that you are responsible for something and you’ll never get any respect from the readers, someone else will however. The only thing you’ll get is a bag of money and you will have to start looking for your next job. Ewan McGregor (whose character doesn’t have a name and is called The Ghost in the credits) is such a writer and has been asked to write the memoirs of English prime minster Robert Lang (Pierce Brosnan). He has a very short time to finish it. Lang already had a ghost writer, but he was found dead and it’s up to The Ghost to finish the book. He is caught up in a political web when Lang is mentioned in an international case about the treatment of some prisoners. The Ghost starts searching for some answers. Continue reading
After the success and popularity of the original Ghostbusters, it was a logical choice to make a sequel. At the start of this second movie it’s clear that the popularity of the Ghostbusters is not at the same anymore when compared to the end of the first movie. There are no ghost sightings anymore and the Ghostbusters are forced to show up for kids parties to make a living. But even the kids think they are boring.
As this setup would result in a very dull film and this movie is about ghostbusters, it’s no surprise that there supernatural things start happening again, which allows the iconic quartet to get back to work. Continue reading
