Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) – Review

Review Die Hard with a Vengeance

The hope that we’ll get another new Die Hard movie which is worth watching seems to getting smaller as the movies (and the acting Bruce Willis does) are getting worse. Still the the original Die Hard movie and this third film in this franchise have gained a special place in my heart. They are wonderful, entertaining action movies in which the main characters end up in a situation which they can’t control and are forced to do anything to make the best of it with the means available. Die Hard (1988)

Review of the original Die Hard

A while ago I wrote an article about the death of DVD and Bluray as I think we are slowly seeing a move from ownership to access. Sites like LOVEFiLM, Netflix and the Apple store which stream movies, make it very easy. It’s so easy that when I wanted to rewatch Die Hard, which I actually own I was too lazy to seach for it and decided to stream it. It made me realise that DVDs are not so important to me anymore.

I had been meaning to rewatch this movie for a long time, but after watching the very disappointing A Good Day to Die Hard I was in a rush to watch it cause I needed a reminder about how awesome the first movie was. Continue reading

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

It seems that John McCLane can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble. A Good Day to Die Hard is the fifth time something happens which he wasn’t expecting. No matter the situation it seems he’s able pull himself through. He has slowly turned from an unlikely hero into an invincible Rambo and it seems that in each subsequent movie everything needs to get bigger. Initially it was just a skyscraper, then it was an airport, a whole city, America and now Russia. McClane heads there when he hears his son is in a lot of trouble and as things go he winds up in trouble himself. Continue reading

Looper (2012)

review

The time travel genre has produced some great movies through the years. Movies which make you think like Primer, Timecrimes or Donnie Darko, dramas like The Lake House or Frequency, entertaining films like Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure or Back to the Future and of course action movies like Terminator. Looper can be added to that last category (and even shares some similarities with Terminator), but gives the concept of time travel its own unique twist. Continue reading

Catch .44 (2011)

review Catch .44

I have a question for you (and it’s not even Monday). Do you ever have the feeling when you are watching a movie that it strongly reminds you of some other movie or that the style is very similar to a movie done by a specific director? I think it happens to all of us and as the number of movies you watch increases it’s a feeling that will happen more often as well. I had it very strongly with this movie. It seems that writer and director Aaron Harvey has been watching a lot of Quentin Tarantino movies. With a lot of focus on dialogue, a non linear storyline, similar music choices, grindhouse style cuts and some very violent scenes Catch .44 offers a lot of the same. Does it manage to reach the same level as Tarantino’s movies? Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Bruce Willis

The weekend is almost about to start and I’m looking forward to it. But the start of the weekend isn’t complete without a new “Many Faces of…”. This week’s star is Bruce Willis (Bruce being is middle name, Walter his first), who was born in Germany and moved to the US in 1957. When he was young he used to stutter, but lost this as he grew up.

Before going into movies he worked as a security guard at a power plant, transported work crews and was a private investigator. He started his career on TV, appearing in an episode of Miami Vice and being the lead in Moonlighting (a show which lasted five seasons).
His big breakthrough in movies is obviously his role as John McClane in Die Hard and cemented him as an action star. Since then he has appeared in a lot of movies. Besides acting he’s also a musician and had various solo albums. Continue reading

Red (2010)

Despite the lakes of adrenaline action stars do get old eventually. This doesn’t prevent them from still making action movies though as we already saw earlier this year with The Expendables. Bruce Willis (55) already played a small part in it, but in action comedy Red he’s the star. The rest of the actors are not known for action movies, but Morgan Freeman (73!), John Malkovich (56) and Helen Mirren (65) show that they know how to handle weapons. Do these older actors still manage to make explosive action scenes or has their time come and should they start looking for retirement homes? Continue reading

Cop out (2010)

Kevin Smith, who has written and directed movies like Clerks 1 and 2, Zack and Miri make a porno, Dogma and his various “An evening with Kevin Smith” DVDs, has now directed Cop Out. The thing that is special about this movie is that it’s the first movie where he did not write the story himself. Is this a movie which you can not miss or is it a movie only for the Kevin Smith fans? Continue reading
