Fist Fight (2016) – Review

Review Fist Fight

It is the last day of school and at Roosevelt High School it means that the students are allowed to pull pranks all day. This results in a school at which not everything goes as it normally does and it is a challenge for the teachers to “survive” the day as anything can happen with either their car or during their classes. Andy Campbell (Charlie Day) doesn’t realise at the start of the day what his will look like, but it will be a lot worse than he can imagine. Grumpy history teacher Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) asks him to help him, but because of what happens next it gets Strickland fired. He wants revenge and challenges Andy to a fight, after school, outside. Continue reading

Grimsby (2016) – Review

Review Brothers Grimsby

It has been a while since Sacha Baron Cohen appeared in his own movie. His last one was The Dictator in 2012 and in the meantime he has appeared in various smaller roles, like in Alice Through the Looking Glass, Les Misérables and Anchorman 2. His roles in those were different, but in his own films he is known for one thing: being able to shock. Whether he does that by not conforming to social norms or embarrassing others, there’s always something you’ll remember. Grimsby is no different and he even seems to take it a step further. Does het go too far here? Continue reading

Kung Pow: Enter the Fist (2002)

Review Kung Pow Enter the Fist

Out of all comedies I know Kung Pow might be one of the most unusual ones. Although Woody Allen already dubbed an Asian movie with his What’s Up Tiger Lilly before Steve Oedekerk did, the latter one took the concept to its extreme. He took the kung fu film Tiger and Crane Fist (also known as Savage Killers), wrote a whole new story for it, added himself to some of the scenes and badly dubbed all the voices himself on purpose. The result is movie unlike any other. Continue reading

Analyze This (1999)

Review Analyze This

Robert de Niro became famous for playing characters connected with organised crime. His roles in movies like The Godfather 2, Goodfellas and Casino are iconic. He is good in these roles and playing a mobster in a comedy came as no surprise. Usually these type of movies that make fun of the concept of organised crime aren’t very good. When this first came out my expectations were low, but as it was de Niro I did need to check it out and was pleasantly surprised by Analyze This. It was time to revisit this film. Continue reading

This Is The End (2013)

Review of This is the End

In 2007 Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel did the short film Jay and Seth Versus the Apocalypse. It was a short film with just the two of them in a room, mostly arguing. I did not think it was that funny or interesting, but it was that short which would be the inspiration for this movie, This Is the End. The question is whether this comedy also disappoints or if it is comedy gold. Continue reading

De Marathon (2012)

Review

My whole life I’ve lived in or around Rotterdam, a city I love with a passion. For those that don’t know the city, it has been one of the biggest ports of the world for years, which always gave it a working class feel (although that has changed a bit through the years). People from Rotterdam have their own way of speaking and their own type of humor and this movie is set in “my city”. The Rotterdam marathon is something I’ve never participated in, but I have stood at the sidelines since my father ran it two times (if I remember it correctly). Suffice to say I was interested to see if this movie would embrace its locale to the fullest. Continue reading

2 Days in New York (2012)

There are various actors who make the step to directing. Ben Affleck and Clint Eastwood are good examples of it. Julie Delpy is an actress who also has appeared both in front of and behind the camera, with 9 directorial movies to her name. 2 Days in New York is a sequel to 2 Days in Paris. I hadn’t seen that one before I saw this, so I didn’t have any expectations or attachment yet to the characters. Starring Chris Rock and Julie Delpy, is this comedy worth checking out? Continue reading

Away We Go (2009)

Becoming parents is one of the big changes in your life and Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) are on the brink of experiencing it. Verona is six months pregnant and they are getting ready for it. They have moved near Burt’s parents and when they pay them a visit find out that they are planning to move to Belgium just before the baby is due. It’s a big shock for them and they decide there is no reason to stay where they are and search for a new place to settle. Continue reading

50/50 (2011)

50/50 review

Sometimes you must not believe everything you read. I try to read as little as I can about any movie I want to see, but I did catch some things about 50/50. Everywhere I read about this movie it was described as “a comedy about cancer”. I can imagine a lot of people being shocked about that. How can you make fun of something so serious and I was interested to find out how it was handled. Last year I wouldn’t have believed that a comedy about terrorism would be, but Four Lions showed that you can make anything funny. So what’s the verdict on 50/50? Continue reading

The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

A couple of weeks ago the Monday Question was about comedies. One of the movies that was mentioned was The Gods Must Be Crazy. I was already told by others I should check it out since they saw it when they were youngers and thought it was hilarious. So it was time to give this a look. This movie was written by South African director Jamie Uys and was a movie that was pretty unique in both its setting and humor. Continue reading
