Suicide Squad (2016) – Review

Review Suicide Squad

While the various heroes go head to head in the movies, this is also the case with the studios. Disney’s Marvel Studios has had hit after hit since they started the Marvel Cinematic Universe. DC (together with Warner Bros) has tried to do the same, but when you take a look at their past five films Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, then you can see their track record has been anything but impressive. That’s also the reason that I approached this film somewhat carefully. For the last year it has been almost impossible (trust me, I’ve tried and kind of succeeded) to disregard and stay away from it and I hoped that this finally would be a DC movie I would be able to enjoy again. Has Suicide Squad managed to do that? Continue reading

The Many Faces of… Jared Leto

overview movies roles Jared Leto

Looking at this long running series I was surprised to see that I had not done an instalment on Jared Leto, who was in one of my all time favourite films, Mr.Nobody. He was born on December 26, 1971 in Bossier City, Louisiana. Growing up he moved around a lot because his grandfather was in the army. His father took his own life when Jared was just eight years old. His mother stimulated him to be creative. He was so interested in art that he ended up going to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Because he liked visual art so much, which included filmmaking he stopped in Philadelphia and went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He also started acting and did some small roles on various TV shows, including Camp Wilder, Almost Home and Rebel Highway. He landed a bigger part in the show My So-Called Life. He slowly started acting in movies like The Last of High Kings and Prefontaine. He got a supporting role in Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line. He acted in Black and White, “Girl, Interrupted”, Fight Club and American Psycho. He starred in Requiem for a Dream and lost 28 pounds for the role. Other movies he was in include Alexander, Panic Room, A Beautiful Lie and Lonely Hearts. For his role in Chapter 27 he gained a stunning 67 pounds. For his role in Dallas Buyers Club he lost a lot of weight and his performance earned him an Oscar. Besides his acting career he also is part of the band Thirty Seconds to Mars. Continue reading

Obstruction 4: Mr. Nobody (2009)

Review of Mr. Nobody

For my entry for Obstruction 4 in the 5 Obstructions blogathon I decided to rewatch and review (and analyze) a movie which is in my all time favorite top 3 (the other two are Pulp Fiction and Black Swan). There are many reasons I love this movie, but I’ll get to that later. The obstruction itself I though was quite challenging and it did make me look at the movie in more detail, something which I did not mind at all.

Mr. Nobody was the feature length movie Belgian director Jaco van Dormael made since 1996. According to Wikipedia he had been trying to film the movie since 2001. When he finally managed to get financing it turned out that he would be making the most expensive Belgian movie ever made with an estimated budget of €33 million (US$47 million).

When writing the film van Dormael was influenced by movies like Run Lola Run and Sliding Doors. He wanted it to be more complicated than those movies and look at life as a whole and in his words “the abyss of infinite possiblities” that offers and that is exactly was he has managed to do with this movie. It is a movie which unfortunately is not widely known and one I always recommend to people first when they ask me about a movie they should check out. Continue reading

Mr. Nobody (2009) – Movie of the year?

What are the consequences of the choices you make? That’s the big question that’s asked in Mr. Nobody. It’s 2092 and Nemo Nobody is the last mortal man on earth. The rest of humanity has found a possibility to live forever (it’s not made clear why Nemo is not using it). At age 118 he’s big news as everyone is waiting for his death. A journalist manages to get into his room and ask him to tell about the life he has lived. Nemo starts his story and it seems like he’s not telling about his life, but about several different lives. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

The next movie out of the IMDB top 250 which I have seen is Requiem for a Dream. I tried watching it years ago, but could not get into it and didn’t finish watching it. I just didn’t like the vibe it gave me. It’s now some years later and seeing it in the top 250 i was curious about it, so i decided to give this film another chance. I’m glad i did. Continue reading
