Mark Wahlberg lately seems to pick out roles in which real events are dramatized. He played in Lone Survivor, which showed how soldiers had to survive once their mission didn’t go according to plan and in Deepwater Horizon he worked as an engineer on an oil platform which exploded. Both of those movies were directed by Peter Berg and Wahlberg connects with him again here. This film tries to recreate the events surrounding the bombing of the Boston marathon. A terrorist attack which had a tight grip on the city for days and received lots of media attention. Continue reading

Pain & Gain (2013)
When the average movie reviewer hears the name Michael Bay it will immediately bring up words like “lots of explosions”, “empty” or even “bad filmmaker” and looking at the scores that were given to the Transformers movies, The Island and Pearl Harbor you might even be able to write a piece to support that. Still I do think he has made some very entertaining movies like Bad Boys, The Rock and Armageddon. All those movies have a huge feel to them and for Pain & Gain I was expecting something similar. It turns out that this is a Michael Bay movie (it has the specific look), but in comparison to his other films it actually is different, somewhat smaller. It is also based on real events (ok, I’m already hearing you say “so was Pearl Harbor and we know how that turned out”) and turns out to be quite an entertaining film. Continue reading
2 Guns (2013)
Just one look at the poster was enough reason for me to go watch this movie: 2 Guns. Denzel Washington. Mark Wahlberg. With a title like that and those actors I was expecting to have a great time with an entertaining action movie. The movie started out interesting: Two men who head into a sleepy town to prepare a bank robbery. Without knowing anything about the movie I was looking forward to a great 109 minutes. Unfortunately I should have prepared for utter disappointment. Continue reading
The Big Hit (1998)
If this image above interests you than I can already tell you that you should check out The Big Hit if you have not seen it yet. It quickly summarises this over the top action movie perfectly as it both silly and entertaining. I had not seen this movie in ages and when I recently was browsing IMDB it came by in the suggestions. It was a film I had forgotten about until I saw its poster and I just had to revisit it. The Many Faces of… Mark Wahlberg
It’s that time of the week again, the thing some of you are craving for, the one, the only new installment of the Friday Faces (which also happens to be my 700th(!) post on my blog).
This week’s star is Mark Wahlberg. He was born June 5, 1971 in Boston. He lived in a busy house as he has 8 brothers and sisters. Growing up he had various run ins with the police, including use of cocaine (at the age of 13), assaulting various people and eventually was charged with attempted murder. He ended up in jail for 45 days and after that he slowly started changing. His brother was very succesfull as part of New Kids on the Block (he himself was even part of the group but quit) and Mark started his own recording career. He had a hit as Marky Mark with Good Vibrations. After this he also started doing advertisements for Calvin Klein.
In 1993 he appeared in a TV episode of Out all Night and his first movie was the TV version of The Substitute. He showed a lot of promise and when he starred in Boogie Nights he made a name for himself as a serious actor. He has since starred in big movies like The Perfect Storm, Three Kings and The Departed and also proved he is a great comedic actor in The Other Guys and Date Night. Continue reading
The Happening (2008)
Before I watched The Happening I already heard a lot of bad stories about it. M. Night Shyamalan supposedly was losing his magic touch he once possessed. Of course I like to make up my own mind about things, so decided to watch The Happening myself.
A word of warning: Normally I try not to spoil too much about what happens in a movie, but for this one I’m going to make a big exception. So if you don’t want to read spoilers stop reading now. Lees verder
The Other Guys (2010)
The first scene of the Other Guys is so good and over the top that Michael Bay probably will be impressed by it. Agents Christopher Danson (Dwayne Johnson) and P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) show in only a couple of minutes how to catch criminals, even if that means causing millions in damages. They are so popular that nobody really cares about something like that. They also refuse to do any paperwork (as they are way too cool to spend time on something so useless), but their boss, Captain Gene Mauch (Michael Keaton), doesn’t mind as there are enough other police officers available at headquarters that are able to do this boring job.
Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) are two of these officers. Allen doesn’t mind doing it at all (he even volunteers doing it), but Terry hates having to sit behind a desk. Because of an error he made when he was younger he’s forced to having a desk job.
Allen however is excellent in the job he does and by doing his paperwork properly he finds out that David Ershon, a wealthy businessman, has made some mistakes related to his business. Allen and Terry decide to arrest him for it and by doing so they get entangled in a bigger case than they were expecting. Continue reading
Date Night (2010)
Phil (Steve Carell) and Claire (Tina Fey) Foster have been married for many years. They work very hard and have two kids. After all these years the excitement of their marriage is starting to disappear. Even their weekly date night is not that special anymore as they go out to eat at the same restaurant and are home again before ten o’clock. When they hear that some close friends of theirs are splitting up, Phil decides to do something different on their date night. They head for Manhattan to eat at a very trendy restaurant, which Claire has been wanting to eat at for ages. When they arrive they find out that the restaurant is so popular that you a reservation has to be made months in advance. Phil does not want to go and decides to pretend he’s someone else when a name of another couple is called and no one responds. While they are enjoying the excellent food they are approached by two men who ask them to step outside as they need something from them. This is the start for a fun (and exciting) comedy Continue reading
