“What have I just been watching!?” That was the first question that popped into my mind after watching The Counselor. My expectations in advance was that this would be a movie which would be both visually beautiful and also engage on an intellectual level and I had enough reason to do so: directed by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) and starring an amazing cast, including Michael Fassbender, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. With so much experience and raw acting talent it was not strange to have those expectations. The first blow came before seeing the movie as a lot of bad reviews entered my mailbox. It made me decide not to see the movie at the cinema, but wait until it was available on DVD. It could be that I would like this movie a whole lot more than others did and in the end it is all about forming your own opinion about something. After watching it though that question went through my mind about what I had just seen. Was this an amazing misunderstood Ridley Scott movie or was it as bad as all the reviews had made me believe? The Many Faces of… Michael Fassbender
Despite all the love/hate Prometheus is getting, most reviewers agree on one thing: Michael Fassbender was awesome in it. Enough reason for me to shine a light on his career in this new installment of “The Many Faces of…”.
Fassbender was born in Heidelberg, Germany (his father is German, his mother Irish). He speaks German fluently. His parents moved to Ireland when he was 2 where his father was a chef. Fassbender served as an altar boy and had the keys to the church. He had a fascination with Star Wars and collected the toys when growing up.
He attended St. Brendan’s College. When he was 17 he still didn’t know what he wanted to do. He thought about being a guitarist, an architect or a journalist, but ended up acting. He was in a school play as one of Cinderella’s stepsisters. He followed some drama classes and got into contact with the guy running it who started a company where he acted. He later was inspired by Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and performed in a stage version of it. He was recommended to the Drama Centre London. After finishing it he went on tour with the Oxford Stage Company.
His first work on TV was in Hearts and Bones and the Spielberg produced Band of Brothers series. He kept doing a lot of TV shows and slowly started doing movies as well. He appeared in 300, starred in Hunger, X-Men and worked with Tarantino in Inglourious Basterds and has shown he’s a very talented actor. Continue reading
X-Men: First Class (2011)
The X-Men movies have been a big success. The original X-Men movie grossed 296 million dollars worldwide, X2 made 407 million and The Last Stand and even higher 459 million, despite the critics being more negative about it. People love the characters and movies, so making an origins story was a no brainer. Professor X wasn’t always known by that name and the same goes for Magneto. Does X-Men: First Class provide an interesting history lesson or is it a class you’d rather skip? Continue reading
