I’m always fascinated by documentaries which show the justice system at work. Maybe it’s because I studied law, but the process always is interesting to watch (even though all my knowledge of the American system comes from movies) and Murder on a Sunday Morning shows a lot of that. The case is about an elderly couple who was on holiday in Florida. They were at their motel and a black man robbed them, killing the wife. The man gave out a description and only 90 minutes later 15-year-old Brenton Butler is arrested and positively ID’ed by the husband and the police have a signed confession. It seems like a closed case and is taken to trial. When that trial starts it becomes clear that it is all but a closed case and that the police might have not done everything they should have. The Lost Cinemas of Rotterdam: Oscar
In this series I take a look at cinemas in Rotterdam that have closed down. This week it’s the Oscar cinema. It opened in the centre of Rotterdam in 1975 at the Meent and closed it’s doors in 1989 and had 215 seats.
What surprised me though is that I didn’t know it existed even though I could have walked past it when I was younger. I asked my parents and other people about this, but no one could remember it. It was the one where the original location eluded me. I had an idea of its location, but no one could confirm it. I came into contact with someone who’s grandmother used to work there, but even he couldn’t pinpoint where it was after I sent him some pictures. It took me two weeks of research to finally track it down and once I thought I found the location I couldn’t wait to see if I was right. Continue reading
Inside Job (2010)
This year Inside Job was the winner in the documentary category. It beat Gasland, Restrepo, Wasteland and Exit Through the Gift Shop. Personally I would have liked to see Exit Through the Gift Shop win the statue. I have not seen Restrepo and Wasteland, so I can’t judge those two, but does Inside Job deserve its Oscar? Continue reading
The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)
This Argentinian/Spanish film (its original title is El Secreto de Sus Ojos) won the Oscar for best foreign movie in 2010. It’s also the most viewed film of all time in Argentina (3 million viewers). After hearing some good stories about this movie I was really looking forward to seeing it.
The movie is set in Argentina, where Benjamín Espósito (Ricardo Darín) retired a couple of years ago after having worked as federal agent for several years. There is one case that he still can’t let go and he wants to write a book about it. When he was still investigating crimes, together with his partner Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella), there was a case in which a woman was raped and murdered. As he sees the extreme love of her husband after her death touches him so much that he swears to find the person responsible. Continue reading

Woody Allen’s Annie Hall ranks high within the IMDB top 250 (it’s on place 132 at the moment). I heard it was one of the best romcoms around and the it won the Oscar for best movie, beating Star Wars. After reading about these facts i just had to see this movie. You can imagine my expectations were very high. Continue reading
