Furious 7 (2015)

Review Fast & Furious 7

Despite the fact that there are a lot of movies to look forward to this year, this seventh(!) instalment to the Fast & Furious franchise was on the top of my list. I gave the previous one a perfect score and couldn’t wait to see what the next one would bring. Unfortunately the movie had to be postponed by a year after the unexpected death of one of its main stars, Paul Walker. It meant the movie had to be rewritten because he had not yet filmed everything yet. Has it hurt the film or is Furious 7 still running on all cylinders? Continue reading

The Monday Question: Timing!

With the death of Nelson Mandela last week and the death of Paul Walker a week earlier I was wondering about movies. In case of Paul Walker starring him and in case of Mandela about him. Walker’s VOD movie Hours will be released at the end of the week and the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom starring Idris Elba is also starting to play in cinemas. The fact these movies are playing so shortly after their deaths gives me a double feeling. Of course they might be worthwhile movies, but their timing also gives me a feeling of trying to cash in on the actual news about them. So this week’s question:

What do you think about the timing of movies released shortly released after someone’s death?

The Many Faces of… Paul Walker

Overview movies Paul Walker

This morning I was sad to read the news about Paul Walker’s unfortunate car accident which has cost him his life. I am a big fan of the Fast & Furious franchise and always enjoyed his work in those. Although I am not very familiar with the rest of his work (only seen a couple of his other movies) it is a shame that this actor is no longer with us. I thought there is not a better way to celebrate his work by taking a look at the work he has left behind in this special Many Faces of post.

Paul Walker was born on September 12, 1973 in Glendale, California. He studied marine biology when growing up. He started acting early as his first TV work was in a Pampers commercial and did other modeling. In 1985 he appeared in TV shows including Highway to Heaven, Who’s the Boss, The Young and the Restless and Touched by an Angel. His first movie role was in the horror film Monster in the Closet. He became more famous when he acted in Meet the Deedles in 1998. He appeared in movies like Pleasantville, She’s All That and The Skulls. When he appeared in The Fast and the Furious in 2001 though it meant his big breakthrough. Since then he appeared in the sequels in the franchise and movies like Joy Ride, Timeline, Into the Blue, Flags of Our Fathers, Takers and Running Scared. Continue reading

Fast Five (2011)

Dominic (Vin Diesel) and his crew are back and on the run from the authorities (in the form of Dwayne Johnson). Stuck in Rio de Janeiro with no money there is only one way to earn something and this is by doing a car related heist. Unfortunately not everything goes as planned and the crew make a plan which will allow them to escape the authorities and also get rid of one of Rio’s biggest drug bosses. Continue reading

Flags of our Fathers (2006)

Images can be very powerful. The can change someones opinion or generate a specific feeling about a war. Lots of war have one iconic image which people will remember when you mention it. If you think about Vietnam, a lot of people will know the picture of a man being executed by the army. If you think about the war in Iraq, the video of Sadam’s statue being taken down jumps to mind. Countries use these images effectively to shape an opinion, even though the reality might be different.

Flags of Our Fathers focusses on the picture of American soldiers raising the flag on the island of Hiroshima. It was a picture which was used to give the American people hope, but it was also used as something to raise money to fund the war. Continue reading
